E3 is a pointless event now. I'd rather more companies took the Nintendo direct approach instead of a 2 hour vomit of announcement for things not coming out for 5 years.

How did E3 even work for Sony / MS? Third party is on both platforms, how did they decide where to play their trailer? Did MS and Sony buy the trailers or did publishers wanted theirs to be seen at the conference of the market leader? Anyways, I'm pretty sure it's expensive for companies to attend those events, sony pulling out is most likely to save some money. Since the PS5 is in developement they probably also told their first party devs to make some launch titles that they don't want to reveal just yet.

I think the PS4 backwards compatibility is enough to satisfy the vast majority of people if Sony can make it work properly. I'll agree MS is better at it because they have a lot of backwards compatibility experience from Windows. Crossplay is really irrelevant most of the time, if anything you don't want to put PC and console together in something like an FPS game. Japanese developers could not care less about Xbox, a lot of multiplat titles rather went Steam and PS this year. Splitting up the playerbase with multiple variations of the same console is bad, I really hope Sony does not do that. Sony has a very strong line-up of 1st party devs already working on games. MS has potential with their acquired indie studios but they don't have the same level of experience and have to prove themselves first. We will see. As for VR, hopefully next gen is gonna be strong enough for them. Now I think PC is the best platform for it, although AstroBot is the highest rated VR game currently by far. VR is really not my thing but if they can put out fun games I support that.

Smash isn't Mario Kart, Mario Kart Wii sold less than 1/3 of it's copies in it's first year, Smash generally sells almost all of it's units in it's first year with maybe 1 or 2 units outside of that lifetime, and generally sells most of it's units within it's launch period. Mortal Kombat is far closer to Mario Kart selling only a few units in it's first year and selling an overwhelming majority of it's units over it's lifetime.

Last years E3 was one of the best E3's in many many years. People who thought it was bad are just casuals who play no games but a select few.
