Fuck, that's actually a really hard one. There's a little indie source walking simulator called Infra that captures the "journey though a decaying abandoned world" vibe pretty well, at least in parts, but it doesn't have any of the surreal psychological stuff that Stalker did.

The movie was boring as hell imo, both the book and the (modded) games are better

I actually went and watched it in a theater not that long ago. I understand WHY the movie is important and loved. That doesn't change that it's a 3 hour Russian movie that is downright tortuous to get through. I still even like it, but mostly because the struggle of the audience is part of the narrative too. It's sensible though that lots of people who know what they're talking about, still won't care for it though.

Honestly, Arrival I really didn't like, and Annihilation, minus the alien sequence, was pretty passable. Any issue I have with the both of them, is that they're held in this oddly esteem, when they really just pull punches that science fiction literature has been engaging with for years. I want more scifi movies that tackle truly alien concepts, and as far as baby steps go, these are acceptable, but not even close to enough.

I liked Arrival and consider it to be one of the few movies I've seen that calls itself sci-fi and is actually sci-fi (not just a thriller/drama in the future like most times). Annihilation had good visuals but the plot was too sparse for me.

It's about a Hungarian village and the effects of the end of communism, but it's more about the atmosphere of the film as it's very surreal and experimental. It's probably best known for a scene that includes live torture of a real cat.
It's a good movie, but obviously a seven hour, black and white, Hungarian movie isn't going to be for everyone.

It's both. Ayys perceive time non-linearly and communicating with such a creature would be hard. That's the point of the film, it makes a bunch of bullshit up about how languages work to convince normal people that the protagonist is qualified to be there talking to ayys, I can see how it would piss linguists off but not why it's such a problem that the film is shit for it.
