Gensokyo is the balance between youkai spreading fear and humans fearing them.
If ONE human straying outside the balance like FT is a big deal then one-two youkai who help the balance by causing mischief are big deal, too.

6 is very simple with none of the weird scoring gimmicks that every later game in the series has while 7's gimmick is fairly simple and it adds a couple of helpful features that become standard in every subsequent game.

I wish the mainline touhou games on steam had achievements. I want achievements for beating the game on normal 1cc, on lunatic, with marisa, without bombs, without deaths. Achievements for beating the extra stage, for capturing every spell card. If all mainline touhou games were added onto steam with achievements for beating them with under particular conditions, I would buy them all and play the shit out of them. Working towards an achievement and having something to remember and be proud of, something to show off and prove, would be really satisfying. I would be motivated to git gud.

I know I could just download the games for free and go for challenge runs on my own and git gud, but it's just not rewarding enough on its own. I know some hardcore shmup elitists are going to say the satisfaction is all in playing the game and not the arbitrary achievements, but that's kinda unfair; most of the good popular shmups (both by CAVE and not) on steam have fun achievements to work towards, and touhou does not.

I also wish touhou games on steam came with official english translations.

PCB suffers as a whole from a lot of spellcards not actually being significantly harder or easier across difficulties. Phantasm is literally just a hard extra for PCB and a lot of spellcards you already learn how to do on Ran.

There's no need for steam achievements when 1cc charts exist. You're not restrained by the developer's wishes in making up your own challenge runs and marking them down however you want. They encourage finishing the games with all shot types, provide huge confidence boosts when you fill out a new row and even make for great e-peen measurements if you're into that. Go grab a template off /jp/ and see what you've been missing.

Elitism, and honestly I can sorta understand it even though I hate elitism in general. Shmups and bullet hells have always been a kinda niche arcade genre, something that can't really tell a story or have mass casual appeal just by design. To be fair, having played some of the classic shmups after getting into touhou, a lot of these difficult games are really good too, and have design mechanics and graphical style that are really cool in their own way, even if obviously different from touhou.

Then imagine touhou comes along. A bullet hell series where a bunch of fans are in it for the "anime waifus" and the porn and cute fanart, the lore, the non-shmup fangames, the memes; basically everything but the gameplay. A number of these secondaries would be people who never played a bullet hell game before touhou, and act proud and haughty about the canon games to justify their love of touhou like "sure we like the memes and the waifus but the bullet hell games are great and you'd probably suck at them so fuck off about our hobby". And so the shmup fans, who are in it to enjoy the core gameplay of shmups and would probably enjoy a little more appreciation for their niche genre, get these touhou fans being asses and giving shmups a bad image, and they're like hey what the fuck?

And then from there you see shmup elitists saying "wow touhou is bottom of the barrel basic shit when it comes to shmups, play a real game" and "what's all this hype about touhou? I played a few of the games and there's really nothing special about the designs, are touhou fans all just weeb casuals?" I don't like that it has to be that way, but sometimes that's just the way things go.

Every piece of work has different things you could like about it. Why not enjoy touhou just for the music and remixes? I have a normie female friend who enjoys listening to random youtube music and sometimes she'll show me a video she likes that's literally a touhou EDM remix with reimu fanart or something. There's literally no problem there because she isn't trying to argue or prove something about it like an asshole. Or even if you're a giant anime weeb who likes to do touhou rp on irc channels or something, sure its cringey to us, but if they're having fun writing fanfics and exploring character lore and whatnot, what's the problem? I feel like it's only when I come to Yea Forums that there's such massive arguing about it. It's like both the primaries and secondaries have something to prove. The primaries want to show that they have the integrity to enjoy their shmup hobby, spend time getting good, and respect the canon interpretations of ZUN's original lore. The secondaries want to justify the fun and love they have for touhou and not have to argue with primaries, and sometimes they take their stand in muddleheaded ways that disrespect shmup fans and are ignorant of the canon works.

There is no chart because the answer is always the same. Start with either PCB or MoF, two entries that have little to no gimmicks and are the easiest entries in the series. Go chronologically with Windows games from this point on.

To be fair, Reisen did come to AoCF, and nobody would ever play ULiL over AoCF anyway.

Her moves would be just combination of other characters moves plus tools to keep them together into solid moveset in form of her original moves, like roses, vines and shit similar to Koishi.

So AoCF got a new patch this week, what do you guys think about it? It seems fairly positive with good nerfs to annoying stuff and buffs to weak charactes.
This also got me thinking that it's weird that Tasofro is still working on AoCF, when Unabara said in that interview with ZUN that they were going to stop making the "games that they wanted" (like the flier games) and actually make games the fans want to play (probably a more traditional fighter like soku or IaMP).
I don't think many people were asking or too interested in an AoCF patch, but it came anyway. What do you guys think about this? Are they just not going to start anytime soon, or are they splitting the work hours?

Bad netplay is the main reason I never got into the floater fighters.

That wasn't my experience user; maybe you got lucky or found a community of close people, or maybe things have improved since the beginning.
I just remember around when the game came out, there was a lot of interest around trying things out and netplaying anons and friends, and I remember the lag being so godawful that it immediately killed the hype for a lot of people, until you either got lucky and found someone near you, or until someone figured out how to make a roll system.

Yup, that's definitely the difference. The thing is, sokuroll lets you play almost anyone with decent smoothness. Soku has players scattered across mostly europe, the west coast, and south america, and in my experience, playing with most of these anons (and even a few from australia) from the east coast was a mostly smooth and good experience. This made it really convenient to practice the game, because it widens out both the playerbase and the timezone range for you to choose from (and for some reason it never felt like there were many other fellow soku players on the east coast). Sokuroll is definitely spoiling me here.

I remember playing AoCF with people not from any other country, just the west coast, and already it was almost unbearable. That was a real sour experience for me, and I had similar issues with ULiL, so I just never really had a chance to enjoy the game. Who knows, they might be fun in their unique ways, but its just not for me.

At least the switch has the novelty of being portable, which works pretty well with pick and play games with high replay value. This will set it apart from the other ports we got.

Shit, portable switch reminded me of a pretty big potential flaw. I was getting excited for the mainline shmup ports, but touhou games are vertical by design, and playing the switch in handheld mode is a more horizontal experience. I guess it wouldn't work.
I'm still definitely fine with fighting games on it though; hopefully this aocf switch thing is a gamechanger and we start seeing some cool nintendo support.

When it comes to the casual entry level, it is relative to the circle you are talking about. For example, you can be a diehard Cowboy Bebop, but you will still be a casual to the diehard fans who enjoy all the works from the same creator. Those will be casuals to the anime enthusiast circles, who will be casuals to the animation circles. Another example is being a huge DC/Marvel fan, you may shit on the capeshit casuals but you will still be a casual for not digging deeper into the bigger circle (comic books).

Touhou is huge and can have its own share of casuals, but as far as shmups as a circle go it is pretty entry level due to its popularity.

Don't feel too bad, user. ULiL and AoCF are really not good. They might give you some mindless fun and some characters have interesting combos which is always nice to create and attempt.
But the game as a whole is just plain trash. The neutral is terrible due to whiff cancelling, the blocking mechanics are waaaay too lenient for the defending player, and there is just too much dumb stuff going on once you actually learn the game and start trying. Everyone I used to play against quit because they couldn't stand how lame and stupid the game was.

It's been a while since I played SWR, but I remember the weather system in that game being really wonky. Something about Spring Haze was especially weird?
Honestly I'm fine with the weather in soku; it's manipulatable, higher level players often take significant notice and advantage of weather, and the ways it changes up the gameplay can sometimes be pretty hype and pretty funny to deal with.

I might be biased because I like the deckbuilding a lot, but I don't think it's nearly as bad. Good players shouldn't rely too much on their alternate skillcards, and proper deckbuilding + deck management and not getting decklocked is an actual skill that can and should be developed.
As an example, recently I've found that I'm playing much better after having removed all alt cards I had on my Yukari deck, prioritizing using more systems and spells.

I just love Cirno man, I was surprised to see her in DDC and even more surprised to see a playable summer cirno for HSiFS. There's also the theme of Cirno being "weak", like she kind of is in soku and PoFV in a certain sense, and iirc I couldn't get her to kill bosses too well in HSiFS either, but that kinda adds to the fun for me! It sorta gives an added challenge and makes winning with Cirno feel all the more rewarding.

Being a high level player myself, I'd say that it's definitely possible, but it's insanely hard, mostly because you lose out on the utility and damage of spellcards and not having pennies or hangekis really gimps your defense.

Unabara and ZUN said on an interview that so far they've been making "the games they want to make", as in the floater garbage that we have right now. They stated, however, that they will now start making the games that the fans want instead (since they're probably tired of their games being dead on arrival).
Unabara has also said that he'd like to see a touhou game on EVO, and since soku is the only one that's been featured in JPEVO so far, I think he probably has already realized that they're gonna have to make a decent grounded fighter again.

Extremely important, it's one of the best, if not the best system card in the game. Hangekis and bombs are also really good, but a well placed penny is just a free out of pressure card.
They are also the hardest to use since they require you to understand how they work and in which places you can best use them, but the reward is really good.

I can't blame them for making what they want to make, but at least they understand that doesn't mean people are going to eventually like it if they keep pushing it.
