It's a furry franchise as popular as Mario with a lot of colorful characters with distinct personalities. This brings out a shit ton of degenerates and awakens a shit load of fetishes. It doesnt help that Rouge is also a character.
The bright colors and round shape of the characters attract children and autists. To make it even better, Sonic's played as a "cool" character, making the audience like him even more. And I'm guessing that the social ineptitude and recluse gives rise to bizarre fetishes as an outlet for their sexual frustration, even if they don't recognize it as so.

After all those years I think I finally know the reason beyond this. It's the simple want to change your perceived self. For these guys it seems they want to be seen as cute, harmless and beeing in the spotlight. I believe the thing that puts us off is combination of that harmless exterior we link with our childhood (innocense and comfort) with the anonomity of wearing a disguise/mask while beeing an adult and expressing your needs and lust (sexualisation, dominance, fetishism). We are used to seeing whores in skimpy outfits or S&M people in fetish gear and intentionally link them to these things, but someone that disguesses itself in a cutesy and apparently harmless way while makes us uneasy. I believe mainly because we can't categorize them. It's like a grown adult that acts like a 10 year old.

Pokemon has humans in it, and a lot of the fanart is just of the humans so its more normal compared to Sonic which basically only furry shit which means a lot more of its fanbase is made up of furrys. Its also important to remember theres only like a couple anthro pokemon while all of the sonic characters are anthro, which is what furrys like.
