People really, REALLY underestimate his chances now that the gun rule is BTFO. RE has western and nip appeal, isn't nearly as dark and serious as some idiots who only played RE5/6/7 think it is, and RE4 is the best selling third party GC game that isn't a Sonic game and #2 highest rated GC game on metacritic. Knives, kicks, grenades, they could maybe have him cycle through his pistol, shotgun, SMG, etc. instead of being limited to just the pistol. The rocket launcher would be a fantastic FS and nod to RE2/RE4's endings. Even if you find him too similar to Snake, it's not like we have fucking like 6 or 7 Snakes in the game already like we do Marths.

banjo was the N64 platformer equivalent of splatoon. an original IP that came out of nowhere and became absurdly popular. nintendo were giving him the face time of pokemon and nintendo, putting him into product placements and putting him some of their other games like mario paint; they even had banjo and crew emblazoned on the walls of nintendo HQ alongside mario and pokemon.
then nintendo let microsoft purchase rare, who basically murdered and gutted banjo as a character and as a franchise, leading to a premature end that's left everyone who grew up with the games in the late 90's/early 2000's legitimately pissed off and vindictive.
they see banjo in smash as a sort of recognition of his significance and as a send off to the character, like if he gets in many of them will kind of pass on in peace like poltergeists into the nether.
