It looks awful and ugly and believe me you CAN tell the difference between that style and properly made sprites. Sickening this shit is considered acceptable and praised, their work looks like Newgrounds quality shit in terms of how it looks in motion.

Clearly you never used the lightning staff. Jumping around and shooting off lightning storms was smooth also controls were super responsive that casting spells didn't feel like a chore.

ACTUALLY because of how many things run independently of each other they separate sprites quite a lot for even the people since matching things like run animations perfectly when changing aim direction is a slut and far easier to just have a different sprite layer.
You'd know this if you did your research.

The sprites are perfect because they allow full and total freedom with no limits. the second they go 3d they lose a lot of that freedom as seen by the game that shall not be named.

Vanillaware games are literally cheap as hell but they're also a very small dev. Dragon's Crown was their most expensive game and it cost US $1 million to make. Imagine the budget on the games before that.

They probably use a program similar to Spine that uses skeletons/meshes.

I see it as more of a compromise, same as when Guilty Gear X came out and people drooled at the visuals and sprite size but the animation was very choppy in comparison to say, 3rd Strike or Garou MOTW. Even when you get nicely done sprites like KoF XII/XIII, it comes at a heavy cost. According to producer Masaaki Kukino when XII was in development each character took 16-17 months to finish with a team of 10 designers. That lead to the small roster size in XII and SNK probably fucking themselves financially.

People just don't appreciate or understand the cost of beautiful sprites or 2D. Even though it was 3D faking 2D, I still saw retards when Dragon Ball Fighterz was in pre-release call it 'a mobile game' 'looks like a flash game' etc. There are people still playing games today that would equate 2D with an inferior product or lesser experience.

I thought it was good but then again I love beat-em-ups. First Vanilla Ware game I really enjoyed and it didn't feel clunky at all. It took me back to the old days playing the D&D arcade games with friends.
