Considering they finished filming in October and already had a completed Sonic model and animation by April I’d say yes. Of course they were probably working on his model in the preproduction stages but it’s still a fast turnaround.

The director is also an animator himself so he probably knows what he’s doing in that regard.

Remember those initial leaks? That was a test to see the reception of the design. It failed, but they got a lot of publicity because of the bad design. So they started a redesign around then.
But because they got so much attention they decided to release the trailer with the original design, that way the get even more publicity, and then they can score points by 'listening to their fans' and doing a redesign (and in record time).

Sonic is a rapidly aging property, Colors is nearly a decade old, Sonic Boom couldn't quite get off the ground, and Generations was glory days rehash that didn't bring in any new people.
To pull off the "whoops sorry about that, we'll make it better" con they would just have to string together a few scenes with a model that tested badly and actually make the movie with an improved model. Even if they had to render out the 2 minute trailer separately it would cost a couple hundred thousand max and bring in way more publicity with every scumbag entertainment journalist who will jump at the chance to write about the studio that actually listened to fan complaints and improved their movie. No matter what their changes are, as long as it's not worse than what they released people will feel like they were part of the production process and give it a lot of slack in how they grade it. The best part is, most people working on the movie have only seen sonic as a midget in a green bodysuit with balls on it so the leak potential is very small.
