Problem with Hollywood isn't the lack of talent, but the prevalence of egos. They like adapting IPs, but have to, and I mean HAVE TO try and put their own spin on it to feel better. I doubt it was that exactly, too expensive, however there was probably already arguments behind the scenes about how Sonic looked, with execs or whoever pushing for the ugly realistic Sonic, rather than an accurate cartoon Sonic. The reaction being so unanimously negative means the execs are now in the wrong and a cartoon Sonic is the only fix. The movie itself won't be changing whatsoever, but they'll be replacing the Sonic model in every shot it's in. Since the movie appears to be mostly complete and it's not releasing until November, they actually do have plenty of time to pull that off.

Simplest change they could make to have him be slightly less horrifying would be to make his eyes bigger. I get that they said in the first press release that they weren't going to do the uni-eye because they wanted him to be "more realistic", but i've seen countless edits now were people have just made the eyes bigger and it's actually doesn't look too bad. He's actually got space between his eyes and his eyebrown that looks like it could have once actually contained biggers eyes, but for some reason they've shrunk them down. All that would need to be done then would be make his mouth a little less uncanny and he'd actually look ok.
