What's the point of the alt mode for the swords? The tutorial says it does more damage to armored opponents, but that's not what the stats say. The greatsword for example does 38 damage on a bodyshot slash against heavy armor but 30 in alt mode.

it depends on the alt mode. in the greatswords case you deal less damage with slashes but more with stabs and it should be faster.

Shields are just fucking dumb in frontline. They don't work like actual shields and instead just project a magical 220 degree force field around the user. Kicking a shield users ass in a 1v1 isn't particularly hard when you can afford to give them your full attention, but they just take too long and too much of a concentrated effort to deal with in a mode were even spending 15 seconds on a single person can result in you getting two spears, a crossbow bolt, and a throwing axe shoved into your back.

Why can't they just take extra stam damage from axes or mauls or something? Hell, you could even make it a perk.

Jump into a duel server (possibly the /vg/ server) and you will be decent enough to at least beat most randoms after a few hours. Even if you are absolutely terrible at the 1v1 combat, you can still do decent in the Frontline mode which is a 32v32 clusterfuck. It's really easy to jump into fights and kill distracted people if you can't handle "proper" fights.

To me, Mordhau is what For Honor wanted to be before going full sellout with China. For Honor was really good up until Marching Fire appeared, and you had chinks teleporting around you, and doing crazy acrobatics a la Beyblade.

As far as I know, it does have a third person perspective but it changes back to first due to combat.

I'd love this game more if damage felt more consistent.

Id like it alot more if I could get into a frontline game consistently, pretty much every single time I try to join them they say the server is full or it just fails to connect, I left matchmaking for 30 minutes and didnt get anything, but I jump onto any other game mode and its fine. there are a lot of useless movesets in the game. same thing with the half handing mode for most swords. You don't actually get bonus damage or anything against armored targets for using it, it simply just changes the animation and flat damage in the stats and then calls it a day. Makes me really have to ask why such a feature even exists for half the weapons.

In straight field battles it's usually a useless feature, but it's incredibly helpful in the right circumstances. Even though the damage might not change or the animations might be slower the alternate style usually has "closer" animations (as in physically shorter, not time-wise) that work better in close quarters or when you're getting swarmed. Moving your grip on the greatsword or longspear lets you fight with it inside of fort towers and hallways without every non-stab clanging off of the walls, and if there's a ton of people around you it's better to try cleaving yourself free in between parries with alt grip because you're less likely to get parried by someone on your periphery.

You're right that it's useless most of the time but knowing when to switch is a literal lifesaver.

Chambering is extremely unreliable, a good player will just parry or chamber your chamber every time you try it. What does work on good players however is feinting the chamber, cancel it and they'll instinctively try to chamber or parry the non existent chamber giving you a chance to hit them.

Its because all you'll ever chamber from a rapiershitter is a thrust, and they can spam fast enough to just chamber the thrust you reversed with your own chambered thrust.

And you can't feint or morph because, again, they're spamming, they'll beat you to the hit.

first person melee combat games suck

it is the equivalent of playing counterstrike with knives only. You shoot a gun, but you see your arms swing a weapon and the only thing getting hit is the center most area of your screen and not the whole arc of the swing.

It is why dark souls melee combat feels good, it is why for honor’s combat system has weight behind it. First person melee combat that was done well was zenoclash or kingdom come deliverance. I miss war of the roses, really liked it over chivalry as well.

No, you can chamber any attack and your attack will match the direction of the chamber. So if you chamber a guy swinging at you from the left your counterattack will be to the left, it's just that rapierfags only ever stab so you'll only ever be getting stab chambers.

Usually right but Mordhau specifically addresses this problem, any part of your swing that's moving at a decent speed will connect and do damage. The physics on swings is actually fantastic.

They're pretty much a guaranteed kill, too, because they're easy to aim and do a metric fuckton of damage.

Can aim a crossbow indefinitely compared to a short/long/recurve bow where your aim shakes and veers off after a few seconds.

If your ping is consistent, it sounds like your weapon isn't getting it's full animation out. You need to ensure you are extending your weapon before it actually impacts the enemy.

No, it's rock solid (as long as you are under 90ms ping). The only issue was with server connectivity on day one if you used Matchmaking instead of the Server Browser.

That reminds me, there's an emblem called "Outcast" you can put on your armor that looks like the logo from the Jedi Knight series.
Netcode looks good, but their servers are overloaded. It's hard to tell right now

A shield user has to attack at some point. When he does make sure you have enough space between you so he is forced to move forward. As soon as he moves forward move forward yourself and kick stab. If he doesn’t block with his shield try feint kick stab.

Go to the objective and go for backstabs. Watch for 2v1s or even 1v1s and get in there and help your boys. For group fighting, focus on your swing directions to make sure you aren't swinging in a way that will hit allies, stab weapons are good for that.

Equip a Short Sword.
Bind both Mousewheel Up and Mousewheel Down to Stab.
Flank enemies that are focused on your allies.
Hug their ass and spin the fuck out of that wheel. Besides the Short Sword having excellent stabbing damage, it also minimizes the chance of friendly fire since you won't be swinging wide.
Be a dick ass backstabbing distraction for your allies if you can't stand your ground as a frontline fighter.

Try out the Toolbox, build walls and turrets at strategic locations.
Don't forget to bring a Mallet or Blacksmith Hammer to repair stuff.
Firebombs at chokepoints to break up a fight between outnumbered allies can be helpful.

Purple dye can only be made by crushing shells found in a handful of spots in the Mediterranean during the medieval era. Which is why purple is the color of kings, royalty and during the roman years the best soldiers.

I am having too much fun playing dress up over actually playing.

And if anyone is interested, Horde pays far better than MP. Getting to stage 21 and finishing is now more common and it pays 1500 to 2000 gold and 1000 to 1500 experience. Takes about 40 minutes. You do have to abuse ranged though, melee is impossible in stages 19, 20 and 21 because of the fire pot throwers.

Only certain helmets are allowed to have hoods, it appears to only be the 'cone' shaped ones. So for example the flat top Templar helmet wont get a hood, but the smooth head one will.

Basically, if its pointy you can probably get a hood, if its flat or wide probably not.
