Learn yaku, use basic logic to deduce tile efficiency, try to know safe discards. If you're going for a fast hand try not to stay on closed waits (terminals and 1 tile intervals).

A riichi is a declaration when you need one more tile to win, and that the hand satisfies at least one yaku and you haven't created an open meld.

If you only need 1 tile to win you can call riichi. It lets everyone know you're about to win but you get an extra point for it.

I dont even understand what you're trying to ask. All being in tenpai means is that your hand is one tile away from being complete. Its impossible to win a hand without being in tanpai first.

you don't even need to have a yaku for riichi because riichi is a yaku. As long as you haven't opened your hand and you're only 1 tile away from 4 sets and a pair (or any other valid scoring hand that doesn't fit the standard combination like all pairs, 13 orphans, etc), you can declare riichi.

When you have a middle tile in a suit like that 4 dots, even if you have nothing else in the suit it's often good to hang onto it because it's easy to stick something to it. With that 4, if you draw 2,3,4,5, or 6, you've got a waiting set there.

I would have ditched the 9 dora a lot sooner, hanging onto dora is good but sometimes you have to give up eventually, especially when it's an honor or terminal since it's a lot harder to make a set out of it.

Drawing the winning tile yourself while your hand is concealed is also a yaku called menzen tsumo thats seperate from riichi. You can combine it with riichi to get a 2 han hand that would otherwise be worthless. It's one of the reasons having a closed hand is good because if you have a hand that DOES have a yaku, you can add riichi to it for another han, and possibly get a menzen tsumo for ANOTHER han.

Tenpai hands also don't need a yaku to be tenpai. You really just need 4 melds and a pair for it, which is useful for tenpai payments. But for example you can also be in tenpai and win through houtei/haitei, rinshan or chankan.

Anyway, the hidden dora is something that only shows if someone won with riichi. An extra "hidden" dora indicator will be flipped for each dora indicator in play.

I tried to load . I made one small mistake, but it doesn't change the fact that the most effective way (without calling pons) is obviously the one which leads to the cheapest hand possible. Instead of daisaigen, 13 orphans or at least honitsu/chanta with some dragons you get 2 han for chiitoitsu.

You have to combine it with other stuff, just like pinfu and tanyao go together well. Chanta goes well with san shoku dou, ippeikou and yakuhai. On top of that you can ron off of tanyao plebs.

Double riichi is a huge risk after the first two or three go arounds, as there will be tons of safe tiles by that point; in fact you're probably better off not calling it early and going off a hidden ron or tsumo.

From what I've heard, spend it on ranked matches and make sure you win. You earn chests with gifts that you sell for dust.

Buying gifts with copper to dust supposedly has a really shit exchange rate, but I haven't checked.

So your first tile discarded on a riichi is safe, and then every tile after is also safe; but not only that, every other tile every other player plays is also safe.

So by the second go around after your double riichi there's 8 safe tiles, after 3 12, and so on and so forth.

Whereas if you just went into tenpai on your first turn while everyone else is building their hands without calling riichi, people won't expect a tenpai that early and likely discard into your hand not even knowing the tile was dangerous.

I watched lots of pro mahjong matches. If pro can call riichi he calls it in 90% of cases. Hidden tenpais are relatively rare. At least they are a lot rarer than you would expect from pros after watching Akagi.
