Assassin's Creed has also sold more than Sonic by a lot. "Generic white cloaked assassin" is also more iconic than Eggman.
Lara Croft is inarguably more iconic than Eggman. Her series sold nearly as much as Sonic' s, she is the only notable character from it, she's had three theatrical films and she's still a common reference in mainstream media.
Master Chief too. Excluding crossover stuff (Smash, Olympic games), Halo has grossed more than Sonic as a franchise despite the latter's 10 year head start (and is far more relevant in the 2010s) and MC is its sole mascot due to Microsoft pushing it.
