no, it was Pokemon red
Wish it would come to switch so I can finally play it. I only know about this game because you guys bitched about geno so much.
Well that is sort of its intended function.
I emulated it not long ago. Ran fine.
Yeah. Fighting monsters instead of stomping them blew my mind back then
Mine was Pokemon Stadium technically my real first one was I think Kingdom Hearts 1
There’s so many other ways to play it user. Why not emulate it?
FF8 was my first one.
Nope, never got it over here. First turn based JRPG was probably Pokemon Blue.
No, it wasn't, you colossal faggot. I started with FF1.
Mystic Quest. Lol
Never got it over where?
Europe didn't get SMRPG or Chrono Trigger. In turn, US didn't get Terranigma.
The first one I can remember playing right now is also Pokemon Red, but I might've played some obscure shit on ps1 that I don't remember cause I was too little when I got it
I'm probably the only person who actually used Mystic Quest for its intended purpose.
Coming out as homosexual to your parents?
this was mine
It was probably one of these two.
My dad played the shit out of mystic quest when I was like 1 or 2. He loved the soundtrack nostly and the idea of curing a boss to death. He played secret of evermore and super mario rpg and I loved to watch him play them as a wee lad. It wasn't until we were in a local game shop years later and found final fantasy 7 that he finally played a real final fantasy. We both loved it and then found and played ff8 and 9. Then ffx came out and the rest is history, it's still my dad's favorite game and the last ff he played. I consider myself along for the ride as I was too young to really grasp those games and play them. Sorry for blog post, thread topic got me reminiscing
No. It was FF1.
even as a genofag, if you're hoping to play it to see what the hubbub is about him, you're probably going to be ridiculously underwhelmed
that said i love the game though, it's very comfy
I didn't play it until a couple years ago. Didn't own a console prior to the PS1 so most games I played were PC.
Mine was oblivion
Kingdom Hearts was my gateway to RPGs.
Dungeon Master on the Atari ST was my first RPG actually. I didn't play Super Mario RPG until around 2002 on an emulator. The only RPG I have ever played on an actual SNES was Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (and Pokemon Silver but that was on the Super Gameboy).
PAL didn't get Super Mario RPG. It feels like we got fuck all RPGs from that era, I never saw them at rental places and we got a second hand SNES when I was a kid with like 15 games and none of them were RPGs.
That's where you're wrong, Zoomer
First RPG was Final Fantasy 1 (NES). I didn't get very far and gave up on it, I was probably too young to get it or something. Second RPG was Final Fantasy 2 (4) (SNES), played it when it was new, it was awesome.
I think mine was pokemon blue
I'm a little but old though
It was pokemon, actually. Then this was my first Square RPG, then a japanese GBA Naruto game and then FF7.
The path of the young weeb ;)
Nope, the original FF was. But SMRPG is the best game of all time.
I admit it. What’s wrong with that?
Close
I was spoiled.
True. It was great.
>I was born in 86-88 or had an older brother that was
Really specic thread there opener there, user
A Blurred Line was actually the first RPG I played.
Nope, but this game and Suikoden were. I loved this game despite my inability to read well at the time. Also, fuck Coelamon. That faggot was my scrubfilter.
That's awesome man. My dad always hated that I played games and blamed my mother for getting me a gameboy and a SNES.
That's also mine, played it around 93 when I was about 6 years old and I kept having to go downstairs to ask my mom what the words meant because of the archaic style of the writing, lel.
Pokemon Leaf Green
RPGs are lame with a few exceptions like SMRPG
First post. I did see my godbrother play SMRPG when it first came out and then played it when I got older. The first RPG I played from start to finish was this.
this
This, but SMRPG had a lot of charm too.
You're like 3 generations early for this old man, OP
No, it was FF4.
That's not Runescape.
does ufo enemy unknown count?
It's the first one I finished, but not the first one I played.
No this was.
Earthbound was my first
Mario RPG LOTSS was my second and I didn't know to how read back then.
No, firered was.
one of the first, but Pokemon red was my actual first
In hindsight those really were baby casual games. Well I was a kid
For me, ot was shareware version of Castle of Winds. Could not make that much out of it as a dumb kid who did not understamd English, but I remember struggling with first dungeon for hours until I figured out you could move diagonally.
.hack is weeabo shit?
Umm it's base off of a anime?
it pretty much is. It even got the Eva artist, drawing otaku fucks in
nope, final fantasy 1 on the nes.
First one was Final Fantasy IV(or Final Fantasy 2 as it was back in the day).
Geno is basically a proto-Waluigi in the sense that he comes out of nowhere to star alongside the franchise's top billed names(Waluigi to be Wario's Luigi and Luigi's Wario, Geno to be the RPG fragile wizard/ranger to Mario's utilitarian hero brawler) and because he was one of the first Mario OCs when Nintendo was doing the usual "just have Toad do it if the other named characters are busy" he kind of has primus inter pares status among Mario characters in that "Not important enough to have major roles in more than one title but is still pretty popular probably because of it" tier of the cast like Waluigi.
The fact that he's a talking, walking doll that fights like a mecha(arm cannons, lasers, transforms into artillery/cannons as a siege weapon for crowd control) instead of being a traditional RPG wizard probably contributes to him being a Smash favorite. Statistically the gam leans towards having your final party be Mario, Geno and Peach so his moveset is a perpetual presence in most player's minds.
As far as personality goes, it's nothing to write home about. Since Mario is mute and can only talk through wacky animations, jumping and literal transformations, Geno does most of the exposition. Mario probably actually has more personality though. He's a hero and fighter renowned the world over but he's definitely got a more rogue-ish personality compared to your usual RPG heroes and the whimsical and happy cartoon character that would debut in Super Mario 64 around the same time, infinitely moreso compared to most silent protagonists. The game gives you options to lie to people about breaking into their houses and stealing their shit(per standard RPG procedure), lets you force an old man to be tortured indefinitely and at one point Mario has to be physically held back from hitting a small child for indirectly bruising his ego. It's honestly a great take on Mario.
the fact that you actually put time and effort into making a shit tier list as bad as this makes me feel for humanity's future.
Indeed. I played a lot of mario RPG as well. I was so autistic as a kid. I would start a new save file, and the grind up in the very first zone to level 6. Before facing the hammer bro. I don't know why, but I must've done it like 10-20 times.
>Xeno is grate-tier
absolutely based
No, FF2
for me, geno is the right blend of being cool and cute. he has a lot of potential that just didn't get touched upon. mallow is the right blend of cute and interesting character development. i love them both for what they had to bring to the table. hopefully we'll see them make appearances again one day. alphadream has stated that they want to bring them back, after all, and square has been awfully willing to let nintendo use geno and mallow lately (snes classic, smash, super mario kun, etc).
of course, Xeno refers in that image to Xenogears and Xenosaga.
Chronicles is Neptunia tier
>Chronicles is Neptunia tier
Hi Eric
What should I play on the SNES? Super Mario RPG, Final Fantasy 4, Chrono Trigger or Bahamut Lagoon? They all look terrific. I played TINY BITS of each as a kid, but never finished them.
I am eager to play them all, but I bet they're all a bit time commitment
smrpg and chrono trigger are less of time commitments than the other two, as far as i'm aware. i'd say those two are necessities, and if you have the time after, play ff4, as well.
twitter.com
posting the smrpg color key while i'm here because every smrpg thread needs it. everyone is so full of personality in this, even geno, who is admittedly rather flat in the actual game.
Yes it was.
Nope, Pokémon gold when i was 4. Literally baby’s first rpg.
I thought the games came first
>Trails and Xeno
>G8
Stopped this after meeting Mallow's grandfather and think the beginning kind of drags. Is Geno close?
No it was thisI didn't play SMRPG until it came out on VC, I always thought it was somewhat obscure, for a Mario game anyway.
>Mario RPG was your first
No it wasn't. But I did like it
>is Geno close?
Yes very, you stopped like right before him
Correct, and I had no idea what the hell to do.
Geno should be very soon, pretty much the next big thing you'll do.
It was, and it's also my favorite game of all time.
My first RPG was Pokemon Silver actually
Lufia 2, actually
Thanks. Not only do i want to meet Isaac's fellow never-ever, I think most of the old JRPGs ain't too fun when you have yet to have a complete party in battles
i'm glad i live in europe. i like terranigma more than smrpg
It actually was.
I didn't know what RPGs were even and why I couldn't beat certain bosses.
I don't blame you. I've replayed SMRPG many times and I always feel like outside of battles going a little too slow since Mallow can't hit quite as hard as Mario without relying on magic, there also isn't really a lot going on in the first part of the game.
>big opening number with Mario rescuing Peach and squaring off with Bowser before being launched by Exor
>then Mario goes on a trip through your standard grassy area to the Mushroom Kingdom, kicks off the main plot and meets up with Mallow
>get Mallow's money back by chasing Croco down Banditt's way, another standard Mario grassy area
>return to Mushroom Kingdom, at least has the novelty of being taken over by enemies
>kick out Mack the Knife and his cronies
>then make your way to the next town through standard Mario underground sewers level and meet Mallow's grandpa
It's once you get to Rose Town, literally the next town, that Mario RPG finally gets into the real groove of things
>town where something big is happening
>go to nearby "dungeon" and kick everyone's ass until stuff stops happening, dungeon usually has a neat gimmick(e.g. the Forest Maze's forest maze), beat boss, resolve problem
You'll notice this is kind of the same gameplay cycle as Paper Mario. The pace kicks up and I think there's a lot to appreciate about the variety of environments and what enemies populate the area. The music is pretty top notch too.
My first RPG was Final Fantasy 7. Super Mario RPG is one if the most recent RPGs I've played.
Nope, pic related was my first RPG though.
>that geno sprite
he's so cute!
