The "Dorakue" (ドラクエ) Effect

Since the 1980s in Japan, especially 1988, people ignorant about video games generalize them as being called "Dorakue" because that's the nickname for Dragon Quest.

The western equivalent of this cultural error are people generalizing any video game console (or even games if they're that ignorant) as "Nintendo," "Xbox," or "Playstation" even if they're not.
There's also the mistake of any game as being "Mario" or even "Call of Duty" and other brainlet shit like that. But those two examples stand out.
Oh and I suppose we can throw in people calling every Pokemon a Pikachu here, too.

My point is Dragon Quest in Japan is big.
Really big to the point where people generalize games as "Dorakue" if they have idea what you're playing, but assume that's what you're playing.
And this mistake was amplified when things like Final Fantasy came around.

I don't give a shit about japan and jrpgs suck ass

だから何?

Oh we know DQ is popular in japan user

That doesnt mean Erdrick is getting in with such an obvious name of Brave.

It's going to be slime

Japanese people are retarded, nothing new.

>says dilating tranny

>assuming

Why is japan so obsessed with dragon quest? Why did it fail to take off anywhere else?

Everyone's retarded everywhere.

IFixtIt4U

Thanks, glad to know

I read online that Dragon Quest games now only release on weekends or holidays because too many people were skipping work to play them.

bullshit
every games release in Thursday in Japan.

Yeah back when DQ3 was released a bunch of people skipped school and work to get and play the game. Releasing only weekends is only a myth however.

DAKARA PLEASE
GET UP MY BABY

Bad timing, failing to release any games during the SNES era and poor marketing.

The biggest failing was Dragon Quest VI not coming here as it was intended to.
It was going to be localized as Dragon Warrior V here back then (the actually Dragon Quest V was passed over completely despite the great story because that game looked too outdated compared to the competition at the time), but Enix America fucked up big time with bad decisions and despite later confirming they actually (if I'm not mistaken) fully translated Dragon Quest VI as Dragon Warrior V, they couldn't release it because they went under.

Nintendo themselves wanted the game released in the west on the SNES, too. That's the saddest part.
Given the time period it would've released during, it would've probably taken off here.
Even if DQVI is the most divisive game in the series, it ironically would've been the most nostalgiabonered game over here had it released on SNES as it was intended to.

because it's consistent and good
KFC took off really well in japan too, but not at first. the japanese hated coleslaw, didn't like the consistency of mashed potatoes, but absolutely adored fried chicken. They swapped out the mashed for fries, removed coleslaw and kept the chicken the same. runaway success from there. western style rpg's in japan are kind of the same deal, they want things on their terms, catered to their preferences, and DQ seemed to handle that really well. also maintaining an art style across decades ripped straight out of toriyama's brain is a huge boon. I seriously can't think of any sweeping changes that were added into dragon quest like final fantasy had, but correct me if i'm wrong.

You're free to do the research yourself by looking up individual dates, but games in the series starting with Dragon Quest IV have all came out on weekends due to what Dragon Quest III did with mass school and work skipping.

It wasn't mandated by the Japanese government, but a conscious courtesy on Armor Project and Enix's part to release the games on weekends to prevent any accidental societal issues mishaps like that again. lol

No one gives a fuck, gook

>be racist
>call Japanese people gooks
>gook is a Vietnamese racial slur, not even a Japanese one

If you're gonna be racist, at least get your racial slurs right.

"gook" is came from Han-guk, Korean
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gook

That makes the fact that Nam vets and pretty much every movie about The Vietnam War ever made calling Vietnamese people "gooks" even more ignorant since that slur got branded with Vietnamese more than Koreans.

It'd be like calling Germans "wops" and somehow wop sticks as a racial slur against Germans rather than the intended use on Italians.

Being a Dragon Quest fan in the west is pure suffering.

That's some true to life shit that lost its meaning stuff there.
>user used it to be offense to Japanese people
>Actually was created for Koreans
>Wound up being used on Vietnamese

And then people actually think racism isn't rooted in ignorance?

You get used to it though. I've been a fan for like 15 years now. You just expect to not get the games and then you wonder why you haven't just learned Japanese yet.

Why would the publisher give a shit? If anything it'd be good advertising.

what does a puff puff feel like bros?

bags of sand

Because Japanese people value a functioning society?
That's evidently why they do it.

just learn moonrunes bros

>and then you wonder why you haven't just learned Japanese yet.

Ooooor the Japanese could just quit hogging all the good shit. I wish I could just move Japan to the middle of the Atlantic. Would make things a lot easier. And they'd probably appreciate not being so close to China anymore.

The release of Doom notably caused a loss of work productivity in the US. Society didn't collapse because of it though.

That's nice. Japan made up 3 million of smash's 13 million global sales

>product becomes a matter of public concern
>LOL who cares
I'm not saying it's true, but they would be really stupid if they had something like that going on and decided to ignore it, especially with the kind of government watch that Japan has.

At one point, Doom was more popular than Windows.

Oh hey are you the guy in /dqg/ that posts DQX stuff from time to time?
>tfw /dqg/ died again

Japan's more strict about people pulling their weight in the education and workspheres though.

Depends on the size and whether or not you're getting a massage, going bungie jumping, or having two Slimes rubbed against your face, sirrah.

The most recent DQ game also sold 3 million in a few weeks?
Look I don't care about rosterfags quest to ruin every single series that has dlc rumors but the sales argument is weak

yeah thats me
i WOULD start up /dqg/ again but im still typing up my notes for the pastebin while dicking around with dqx settings

Is there any translation for DQX like there is for Dragons Dogma and PSO2?

And DQXIS will easily sell an easy 2 to 3 million worldwide to the already 4 million+ the 3DS, PS4, and PC versions sold when it comes to Switch.
I don't know about you, but from a business standpoint, it'd seem mighty foolish to not want a game series represented in my crossover who's latest game sold like 7 million copies.

Granted, the DLC character would most likely release BEFORE Dragon Quest XI S even comes out, so who knows what kind of effect that might have on things.

I'd laugh if the Switch version winds up selling 4 million copies when you consider the other 3 versions hit that number combined.
That would be the craziest, funniest shit.

Nope. No Furigana either.
I'm still having a good time though

I would've made another thread, but I wanna wait on it for a while. You got links to your pastebins? I wanna bookmark them.

Nah, there's enough English language video games in the world that I literally don't have enough time to play them all in a single lifetime and more are being made constantly.

Dragon Quest is laughably boring and generic. Just shows how shitty Jap tastes are.

inb4 Seinfeld effect. No. FF1 (yes, on NES) is more interesting than literally any Dragon Quest game.

>implying he is wrong

Actually claiming FF1 is better than DQ8 or 11. Shows that you clearly have never played them or have any idea what you are talking about.

It's always easy to spot who hasn't played Dragon Quest games, or played a little and made the generalization leap and assumed they were right.

'Member when 'Murican people thought Monster Hunter were boring hunter action games for Japanese people that no one else would ever like?

I 'member.

Not even the people who made Final Fantasy during the Famicom and Super Famicom days agree with you, lol.
