Phoenix is a 10x better character than "I am now edgy with an eyepatch for two days and I was actually raised in a foreign nation by a revolutionary" Apollo. The new cast doesn't have that same spark. As interesting as his disbarrment storyline was, I was so happy that they basically retconned AJ and put Phoenix Wright back where he's supposed to be.

It was just an alright case, but Turnabout Time Traveller was great since it was the main cast back at it after almost a decade. If Gumshoe was there it would have been perfect.

Nah, I think they just shouldn't have done a timeskip, at least that way where they even change the protagonist. For me, AA is like a Sherlock Holmes-esque saga where the characters are timeless, very moldable and adaptable to new situations they find themselves investigating. Had they kept on that track, I think it would have been fine.

When you throw out most of the roster and have the former goofy main character do a 180 in personality, that's when it starts to go off the rails. AJ was just alright.

The dynamic in 3-5 with Edgeworth and Gumshoe was amazing, and even the moments with Franziska were great. But in AAI, Kay basically exists to take screentime away from more interesting dynamics and characters, repeat her gimmick out loud every dialogue option because no additional thought was put into her at all, and the game expects us to care about her as much as characters we've known for years. The only reason anyone defends her in any capacity is because she's cute, but there are plenty of AA characters who are cute and interesting without being such an annoyance.

Athena is a good character she just never gets a proper amount of the game devoted to developing her since AA5 and 6 have to pull double duty of retconning Apollo to be likable, AND including the requisite amount of Phoenix + Original Trilogy fanservice.

In retrospect I really applaud AA4 for having the balls to make Phoenix and all his supporting characters mostly irrelevant, because it seems all the new games have to devote a huge section to "what are phoenix/edgeworth/other character that already finished their arc doing these days???"

I disagree. Both prosecutors are direct like Edgeworth, but stray from his path in terms of how they treat witnesses and react to new information. Blackquill doesn't have Edgeworth's haughty attitude when it comes to cutting down the defense's arguments and he also rarely punishes or insults his witnesses unless they stray from the script. As for Nahyuta, he's a bit plain, but that's to be expected from a prosecutor from a country that mixes Hindu/Buddhist beliefs with the law of the land.

Kinda hard to figure out what relationship the prosecution and defense should have now since we've defeated Von Karma and Edgeworth. Doesn't really work to have a prosecutor who's energetic and friendly as a rival.

This. I personally thought that with the original trilogy, the story of Wright was complete. We get backstory (He wanted to be a lawyer because his best friend once stood up for him), we see him face dilemma (having to defend a clearly guilty man when the person he promised to care for is held hostage) and then come out on top of the toughest challenge he's had (Going against his past and living up to Mia's legacy)

Apollo kind of lacks the first part and it never really does come up a lot. In his debut game we never really get a reason why he wanted to become a lawyer other then he's just a dork who always thought it was cool. Not a bad character trait, but not really important for story. We do see him face dilemma (Struggling with doubt that his co-worker may have murdered his best friend) and indeed find resolution (Exposing Ga'ran and inheriting his father's legacy) but the fact that his story changes so drastically between each game is what makes it less. Apollo has a good character but he has an awful story.

Athena however does pretty good on the side of story. We learn she became a lawyer to save Simon, but feels that she's responsible slightly because she thought she killed her mother. The problem is that they do an excellent establishing her character as a brash yet emotionally fragile rookie - to be honest they give her a great enough debut backstory that I dare say it's better then Apollo in his own debut game - but they then they sideline her to only be used for her gameplay mechanic.

Just shelve mainline AA altogether and keep making AAI and DGS games. Maybe a Ghost Trick 2 with a different cast in the same setting too if possible. Or hell something entirely original again, if these writers even know how to do that anymore.

Phoenix turns into a full-on goofy dad with her which is pretty different to what you normally get in this series (plus it's a funny contrast to all the murder scenes and shit they're in I guess)

Cutting Phoenix after AA3 is the biggest mistake in the series and Capcom knows it. Phoenix could have continued to grow as a character where he could have been a more experienced lawyer as time went on and he grew to be able to use his own way of reversing how to think about a case once the whole thing with the Fey clan was finally settled.

Apollo was a huge mistake because they had no idea what to do with him and Phoenix ended up carrying that entire game as a support character. Then Capcom only made things worse by trying to backtrack, thus erasing the majority of phoenix's character development in both the original trilogy and making it seem like the Phoenix in AJ was a completely different person in how disconnected that game is from the rest of the series.

It's like if DMC3, 4, and 5 were all in a constant state of trying to actively work back DMC2 while also calling attention to it at every possible opportunity instead of just glossing over it.

Apollo and Miles would be NUTS in MvC, Edgeworth even more because he is my most wanted in Capcom side

Miles Edgeworth could have Gumshoe as an assistant (similar to Maya for Phoenix), using Missile, and perhaps using his other "secret weapons", such as the metal detector or the fishing rod, attacking from a distance and in a close help Edgeworth to find elements on the stage, preventing projectiles and attacks from the opposing team, but attacking them closely, and with a somewhat weak distance attack to balance the ability (Maya had offensive functions as defensive functions, but gumshoe could be more of a most offensive assistant). Edgeworth could, while collecting evidence, could instead introduce the logic: Edgeworth would have 3 slots like phoenix to store the data, and how to merge them together, would be pressing the buttons together of respective data to store them in another 2 or 3 upper slots, to collect correct logic data that works. When a piece of information is discarded, it can release some type of projectile, maybe the same as those of phoenix, only that these would be red, twice as strong, much slower, and can only be used once until the data is collected again, since it was discarded. Once you have the 3 correct logic data in the upper slots, you can use the tournabout mode. It could work similar to Phoenix, but they could differentiate some special attacks, like replacing paperwork by using case documents in their office (Uh, it's not a perfect idealization, but they could do something unique). The hyper combo skill of level 3 in the turnabout mode, would be "Gyakuten Kenji", which would be like Ace Attorney, but this time imitating the perspective of the interrogation mode of Miles Edgeworth games. I still do not have a clear idea for their hyper level 1 combo skills.

I don't even think that's necessarily what happened. The problem is the character they initially cut Phoenix for is a jumbled mess of unfinished ideas and potential plot threads. So instead of trying to stay course and develop Apollo, they panicked and tried to roll everything back without understanding why nobody liked him and his game. If they had the forethought to realize AA4 was way too soon to have a protagonist switch beforehand, or committed to developing what they switched to afterwards they might have had something. But they didn't and now the series is in a state of "the worst of both worlds" and Capcom has no idea how, why, or what led them to this state.

I don't think the AA5/6 director or writer likes Maya, let alone pairing her up with Phoenix. The first trilogy at least had Pearls banter hinting at them being a thing, but the new games have made her nonexistent or unimportant.

DLC in 6 was alright though I guess. A let down with respect to DLC in 5 but at least it had a proper investigation with Maya. I was kinda hoping that she'd be a legal assistant again but be more like Mia and be kinda useful and not dress like a Japanese hick in court. Or maybe even have her be the character you play as for an investigation where her spirit channeling powers have a cool gimmick.

But it was just old maya copy-pasted with a new model more or less.
