Why is the industry unable to make new popular characters?

Why is the industry unable to make new popular characters?

We’re still talking about Mario, Master chief, Snake, Link etc after all this time.
Name ONE memorable character from this gen

Sans but honestly he doesn't count as much since he was memorable in a very forced meme way that was pushed to death

Steve, Tracer or D.Va, Shovel Knight, Inklings, 2B

>Overwatch
Nah
>Tooby
Sure
>Inklings and Shovel Knight
YES

>Steve

Minecraft
Not Steve
Steve is specifically because of a giant shitpost

agreed. Sora.

Inkling, you fuck.

Regardless, it's obvious why we don't have new characters popping up left and right.
1) Money
Companies pour money and resources into their characters, they want them to live forever and not die because it brings them in money to a cemented and established character that people recognize.
2) With so many big names, things are crowded as is. All the people you mentioned sprung about over 30 years. After another 30 years we'll have a similar group of new people. But you can't expect the same amount of characters that appeared from Mario-to-Master Chief to be created within one gen.

This feels like a closet rosterfag thread

TF2 characters are memorable but that depends on what you consider "this gen"

these two motherfuckers, and the Splatoon Inklings are memorable as fuck

Because everyone went the generic route.

Because they are trying to appeal to the people who only complain about things but don't buy or play videogames.

Don't forget Ori.

what do you mean "this gen" like characters created in this gen of consoles (Xbone, PS4, Wii U/Switch)? or just the turn of the century?

>muh realism
That's why

Because video-games are Art; as Art it'll die and become shit that's only worth for money laundering. Logos is dead and the Left killed it.

knack

There's plenty, Yea Forums faggots just won't admit it because for whatever dumbshit reason.

That's what being memorable means, having memes makes them me orable, link had millions of fucking memes from ocarina. Literally everyone on that list is remembered for a meme reason.

This

It's shulk time!

Steve and inklings are the only ones that can conpare

Look at the cast of Playstation Battle Royale versus Smash Bros. You'll notice that a lot of the characters in Battle Royale are human proportioned while in Smash you have a bigger variety of shapes, especially in the early games. Character designs born out of limitation created all sorts of fun shapes where they had to make the most of out of what little they had. This created both unique silhouettes and better readability.

Because old games was made for kids mainly by Japanese who prefer exaggerated and deformed style while now most of contemporary games are made by westerners who prefer realism over stylized. Iconic characters need to be made into birth by differentiating from others but realism cant achieve it.

Role playing and the desire for self insertion and customization killed off character driven stories. There's lots of great characters in modern games, but they're less iconic now because customization and an "individual experience" is preferable for most people.

Who?

Sans is immortalized as a gaming icon.
