what's the point of the desktop client
Best way to learn after reading the rules a bunch is to just hop right in and practice Yakus.
Knowing how to aim for a winning hand is where everything else evolves from.
HOW TO PLAY
pastebin.com
The only real reason to use this is the voice unlocker and the table bg editor
Good game earlier, with two riichis and no guaranteed safe tiles early in the game it was likely I was going to deal in. Would have played another but I was looking for South earlier. ggs
>your nose gets pointer and longer the more maajan you learn and Akagi you rewatch and reread
MAKE IT STOP
wait so its almost impossible to win if you have 1's or 9's if you have a open hand
only if you have no idea what you're doing
>get 4 pairs and don't want to look like a scrub by ponning everything, so i go for chiitoitsu
>fuck it up everytime
i want to escape the pon palace but all the doors are locked
If you don't know what you're doing you should generally keep your hand closed
But with 1s or 9s, you can set up your hand for a chanta or junchan even with opening it, and then attempt to roll in some other yaku
Chiitoisu and Toitoi are worth the same amounts user; generally what you should do when you have a strong hand of pairs is go Suuankou -> Chiitoisu or Toitoi depending on how the round and your hand are progressing.
this was one of the better arcs to go back to after learning mahjong

New to mahjong, should I not be able to call tsumo here when I drew the jihai, or riichi before that? How does this work?
you can't riichi on an open hand
that hand isn't in a ready-to-win state
You're not in tenpai, you need 4 completed sets and a pair; you have two completed sets, two pairs, and 3 tiles.

>when should I call pon/chii/kan?
mahjong.guide
riichi needs to have a closed hand, so you can't have made any calls to declare it
also that's not a valid hand, you still need two more sets and a pair
Thanks, I forgot about tenpai, I didn't know anything about this a few hours ago
I just looked at the summon prices and I can't believe 10 rolls is like 40 bucks, is that a standard gacha price?
Sorry for bump but couldn't I have tenpai if I got pon on a 1 or 9? it says 3 groups and a pair works
Alright user, here's your starting hand.
What do you go for?
Still not in tenpai
Oh nvm, the fourth needs completion, sage
white dragon triplet open hand
9 terminals drawn, round reset
just go for a random kokushi and then betaori or chitoi depend on the game's situation
Discard all the honors and the 9s and go for tanyao
3/4
One day I'll achieve a yakuman
i get that, but i feel that 7 pairs has the potential for higher scores since you can riichi it (i guess you could potentially riichi a toitoi too but i'm pretty sure that's a yakuman hand anyway) and it seems like it should be harder to defend against than toitoi
i do go for toitoi if it comes up if i actually want to win, but if i'm feeling greedy i'll go for 7 pairs. also it makes me feel smart when i finally get one so that's nice too
kokushi, maybe daisangen if I get lucky
Didn't see the other thread died right after I posted.
Here's how the scoring chart works in Riichi Mahjong
When you win, you look at your hand, and award points, called "Fu". It starts with
20 - For winning
+ 2 - Tsumo
+10 - Closed Ron
Then you look at your wait:
+ 2 - Anything except an open wait (You have two consecutive tiles waiting for a tile on either side, like a 34 waiting on a 2 or 5)
Then your pair:
+ 2 - If the pair had value (what they mean by this is if you had a third tile, would you have a yaku? If yes, you have a value pair)
Finally, look at your sets:
+ 2 Pon of simple tiles (2-8)
+ 4 Pon of Terminal/Word tiles
+ 8 Kan of simple tiles
+16 Kan of Terminal/Word tiles
x2 bonus per set if you did not steal any of it, not even for ron.
Add ALL of that shit up, then round up to the next 10.
Then you double that shit for every single han you have. Then the Japanese double it twice more for literally no reason, and those are your Base Points. For you math nerds, that looks like this:
Base Point = Fu x 2^(han + 2)
Everyone then pays you the BP rounded up to the next hundred. East pays and receives twice the BP before rounding. If someone has ron'd, the person who discarded bears the burden of every single player at the table.
EXAMPLE: 40 fu, 2 han = 640 BP.
Winner of the round is a Non-Dealer. The dealer pays 640x2 which is 1280, then rounded up, making it 1300. The other players pay 640 rounded up, making it 700.
BONUS ROUND: Honba (round continuation)
For every round that East wins, he stays east, and a marker is placed on the table. For every marker, each player adds in an additional 100 points to their score. This is included in the payment for the player ron'd.
Example from above, but there are two honba: Everyone pays an additional 200, or the ron'd player pays 600 extra.
This is also how Pinfu works. Pinfu means "No points", so it's 20 points, + win condition, and then all runs with an open wait and valueless pair
white dragon + opened chanta hoping for sanshoku.
>in riichi with pretty early on
>dumbass chink ruins it with a yakuhai
Don't forget to buy crates for premium luck!
Nooo, I don't want to learn to betaori. I want Yakumans.
isn't riichi a bad idea in this case? you only get pinfu + riichi if you win off a 4, but you get junchan + pinfu if you get the 1
>tfw hindsight bias
imagine draw 4s without riichi
>tfw realizing i have absolutely no fucking idea how to play mahjong
>tfw the tutorial barely helped at all
i can't properly express the level of confusion i'm feeling just trying to play against the AI with a reaction image
play sanma, there's a yakuman every 10 hanchans maybe less. It's work in progress to add that cancer on majsoul so you got to use tenhou html5 ver + translation addon.
I'm never sure if I should call kan or not

What's the hardest yakuman to get?
Also Sanshoku.
Yeah but getting a 4 and throwing it away put me in furiten. Having to tsumo would fuck me up it felt like.
I'm kinda conflicted you're probably right, guess I couldn't resist the delicious free sex button and just trusted my luck.
Considering I have a lot of the tiles for 1-3 and 6-9 it just seems likely the others would go not have them and go for a tanyou and throw away the 1. It was still early on.

Any other good manga/anime besides Akagi? Saki is for pedo weebs, not interested.
you form four straights/triplets + a pair and then you win
Just learn to do all simples until you know better, I thought it was pretty hard yesterday but I've been playing all day for the past two days and it's great.
I was looking for the emo pack on their sticker web but couldnt find shit

T-too easy. At least I got a haneman.
What the FUCK does no yaku mean!? I understand nearly all the fundamentals but every fucking time i see no yaku all i see is "yeah you COULD win with this hand even though you just drew what you need but fuck you tho"
It literally means your hand is worthless.
I don't think you understand the fundamentals if you don't know what a yaku is.
It means you don't have a yaku
wow this guy is badass

maybe it's time to play chink mahjong rules instead
>I murdered a man with 7 pairs/red 5/Dora
And I was only thinking in doing a Pon round!
[slamming of iipin intensifies]
no yaku is like having no hand in poker. even though technically you have a valid hand, its not special enough to be worth points. learn the yaku.
That's what you get for calling pons and chis all the time without knowing what you're doing.
Literally just keep your hands closed until you have can riichi and then do that.
I finally got around to watching Akagi and just finished going through that match. The show is pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd be enjoying it as much as I am if I didn't have a clue as to how mahjong works. A lot of the fun right now is coming from learning moves I can use to get better at the mindgame part of mahjong as well as figuring out what hands I should go for.

I've been learning since I saw a thread with one of those old PC98 strip mahjong games, took me 3 tries but I got my first win against real people. Didn't even do it with open tanyaos either!
you need to censor the eyes too.
I respect this heavily. I wish other people would this too since seeing the same people posting screenshots over and over again makes it seem like a tripfag circlejerk minus the tripcodes.

Genbutsu, suji, kabe. You don't need to "read ponds" like Akagi, because defending in mahjong is about what's safe, not what's dangerous. Read the "get good" links here
Do you get coin or exp when playing friendly match?
fuck this game it's too fast paced for a begniner to be able to think
Just play friendly matches if you aren't in your toes with Yaku. They give you plenty of time to think.
Nope.
You can clear quests with friendlies but you can't grind
probably why the chinamen just gave up and chiponkan their way. you can always set up a friendly with a more lenient wait to practice on.
After a bit you get used to it
I tried joining a one min room once
It was snooze fest
Specially when the guy on your right ponnya every 2 turns and spend a full min thinking
It only becomes a snoozefest when nobody tries to do quick, winning hands either because they want to win big or more likely don't know yaku.
anyone else suffering with loading problems? it just gets stuck at random percentages
I wish I could do this shit on purpose.
Why isn't there an in-between between 5+20 and 60+0? Can't we get a 10+60 or something?

what is the point of basic rules if no guides teach how to actually play
people keep saying not to call for pieces with ron or shit but then how the fuck do I complete my hand? through sheer luck of picking the fucking pieces?
fuck open hands, but if I don't play open I lose anyway because no yaku
>not to call for pieces with ron
bro...
>the first (i think) time i deal in is into a 12000 point hand
i'm not mad
It's okay to cry sometimes, user.
Have you guys mastered the art of dealing in on purpose to a player's cheap hand to avoid potentially dealing into someone else's much bigger hand?
euophrys.itch.io
become more efficient with what you discard so a hand forms faster from just discard and draw. Remember riichi itself is a yaku so that's one incentive to stay closed.
You call Ron when someone else discards a tile that gives you a winning hand. They lose points for what the hand is worth, and you get those points.
Tsumo is when you draw your winning tile yourself.
Riichi is when your hand is 1 tile away from winning, so you lock it in and wait to draw it yourself, or wait for someone else to unwittingly discard it so you can punch their LP directly for massive damage. You can only riichi with a closed hand.
Pon and Chii open your hand so you can't riichii anymore, but it's usually easier to get a winning hand that way, which is why closed hands are generally worth more.
A closed hand will always have a Yaku, an open one will not, you have to know what you're calling.
I let somebody else do that for me. But yeah, some times I will discard tiles that are only safe against that one person I'm trying to avoid and it works out that way.

You can lose to Zergrush nigger every round
But on that final round say you finally manage to pull off a yakuman win
you can still come out on top
It might not seem like it but you can easily complete your hand without opening most of time unless your draw are complete shit
>tfw mahjongsoul isnt blocked in the work computer
Finna get fired bros...
>win every round against all japanese names
>they emote in fear each time I call riichi
also isnt majsoul plus specially for playing on chinese server?
you can still go for yakuhai if you two dragons or round wind or your sitting wind tiles, once you have either of these you can open your hand and just rush 4 sets and a pair, this is probably easiest hand to go for.
for example 3 white dragons than 123s 789 bamboo 456s and one pair of anything
lmao fuck off lesbian
I'm as surprised as you are.
my brain is so tiny but i want to learn mahjong

Holy shiiiiiit. This was the first hand.
Brb calling cops on myself to report myself for this MURDER.
first thing you really should see people trying to honitsu. 1) they keep most/all the dragon wind garbage to themselves 2) one or zero tiles of the suit they want, in the discard. If it's not the case early than gg they changed a chinitsu possibility for the ability to cover their honitsu, that could be it especially if they PON, trying for toitoi honitsu. You need to be especially aware of honitsu farming if the dora is in that suit or the dragon/wind. Try not to feed it of it's your right guy, stop after they do the first call off you let them rot. They can fake it however. You absolutely must master the habit of looking if people throw away tiles from the hand or tsumogiri them, that's this easy to tell if they fake their one suit to fuck you over waitiing for another suit tile with an army or hidden doras. Look for another possible yaku in their hand then. Worth mentioning this absolutely badass shit as closed honitsu, aka menhon, that's not probably happening in bronze.

Is a concealed Yakuhai a viable option?
Just never seems never worth it and fucks me over.
sokuriichi4lyfe
what do you mean?
any room wanting one more fag?
if you have the pair, always call for the yakuhai
if you have the yaku already, what are you talking about
waiting on drawing honor is never worth it, because it does nothing
he means riichi + yakuhai and his problem he is not maxed at efficiency and so, he is slow
FUUUG gg FFF we had a crazy battle going on there, i was in ii-shan-ten aswell.
Let's say your starting hand has 2 red dragons.
And then you just don't call pon even if a third gets discarded.
You either use it as your pair, hope you go tenpai and wait for the last one to get discarded, draw it yourself or Chiitoitsu.
Having your pair be dragons gives extra points at the end right?
Great back and forth man. Too bad it wasn't really a real match since we had someone dc.
pair of dragons is shit
unless it is needed for a yaku or you just want extra han from riiching then sure
but if you have a pair and you dont plan to discard them away
then might as well pon it when someone drop one cause you might end up having to wait for the fourth that might never come
tho sometime you can just deliberately not pon it and use it as your winning tile
because sometime when someone see 1-2 honor on the discard pool they might think its probably safe to discard but then boom ronnyaa

free points if you get the tile after the indicator
If you want to play on your phone, get MJモバイル instead.
If the dora indicator is 3 Pin for example, any 4 Pin you use in a sequence or pair is worth a big point. Unlike sequences, loops 1 - 9 and back to 1, ESWN back to E, and RWG back to R

If you guys having a hard time to get a winning hand, just go for the simplest one.
2-3pairs
2-3sequence
1-2sequence/2pair to Ron or Tsumo
Dora is just bonus points if you complete a hand.
Having Dora doesn't mean your hand is ready, it's potential points AFTER you completed a hand.

If I'm far behind: Kokushi Musou.
If there are several rounds left and I'm somewhere in the middle: Honitsu in the Sou suite, that may develop toward Daisangen, if I'm lucky.
If I'm in the lead, unless the flow has really come my way: Call for a reset hand.
Ur new Akagi.
>when you deal into a random riichi you couldn't possibly play around
>and with all the KANs it's worth a ton
how do you not get mad at this game
Depends on context and the rest of your hand. For example if you have a honitsu, calling for a yakuhai won't change your score, since even though you gain a point for yakuhai you lose one for being open so you could just float two of them as your pair instead.
in real life, after 4 Riichi called (forced draw), do you have to open your hand to prove that you're in tenpai?
play the game long enough, dumb wojak poster.
I tilted hard yesterday when no one dealt on my dealer chiitoitsu hand and i failed to pick my tile. sometimes shit just happens.

I fucking knew it. If tiles speak to you, don't close your ears.
>all the dora go to Kuro
>other player riichi
>now all Kuro's tiles are dangerous
WRONG. In the case of four riichis, all players must reveal their hands.
If I'm in riichi, and someone throws out a tile that would give me less yaku than my other wait, so I skip on it; how long am I going to be in furiten?
You have to show if you riichi to prevent abuse. If you fake a riichi you get a penalty.
forever. you have to tsumo.
Until your next discard.
Wrong. If he's riichi and he ignores a discarded winning tile that's temporary furiten.
It'd be permanent if he drew that tile and discarded it himself.
I thought this was a anti moralfag thread when I saw Akagi.
Because sometimes there's stupid shit like someone calls riichi, other guy calls a kan and deals into the riichi and gets fucked
if u riichi furiten last forever.
Should i watch Akagi if i liked Kaiji
No. You'd be in furiten forever.
>Wrong. If he's riichi and he ignores a discarded winning tile that's temporary furiten.
>It'd be permanent if he drew that tile and discarded it himself.
Actually this is wrong. Temporary furiten only applies to non-riichi ron opportunity.
not related but yes
Temporary furiten is only a thing when not in riichi, passing up a win in riichi puts you in furiten
In their defense sometimes you have zero safe tiles, are really close to tenpai, have no read on their hand, desperately need a safe tile from the kan and don't get it. It's like drowning.
Well fuck you guys are right.
A player who forgoes claiming a discarded tile that would have completed their hand (even if it yields no yaku), is temporarily furiten until the next go-around (the next time they draw a tile). If the go-around is interrupted by a chow, pung, or kong the player is no longer furiten. Note that a player who has previously declared riichi and then chooses to pass on another player's discard that would have completed their hand (even if it yields no yaku) is rendered furiten for the remainder of the hand and may only win via self-draw. Being temporarily furiten only applies to players who have not declared riichi.
Why the fuck do people make shitty low point plays, that can't possible let them win, which end the game?
I'm in 2nd and its last and I'm about to pull some hot shit to take 1st and 4th place's super shitter makes a 1000 point play to end the game
I would say first is yaku, second is furiten are the thing that fuck with new players the most. Everyone had their share of this shit when they learn the game
based chinks shitting up mahjong
1 plus point is something you know.
>check the Yea Forums thread about this
damn, I'm impressed at how that board gets shittier each year
pshh.. nothing.. personnyal...
Most beginners have no idea what their hand is worth, they just hope for the best.
If they're so far behind that they have no way to win without a miracle hand, they might as well just get it over with.
Kinda wanna give this a try, but I don't want to datamine myself.
The copper drip system makes it so bots won't really achieve much in this game but these lads' names still look and sound like they are bots.
what's so hard about making a dedicated "throwaway" e-mail for all the annoying registrations you need anyway?
discard the 8sou
I want to try the JP server but the game is making me pick a new username even though I already have a username for the e-mail I used.
Do I have to start over to get into JP then?
for me, I always question why one should go for big hands? because if you get good enough tiles for risking a big hand you can also go for a cheaper hands more easily, also for a lot of players they hardly get a completed hand so after a lot hands if they do get a bif hand, their points will still just barely touch the player who won a lot of hands or barely would be above them, which make the player going for cheap hands more safe and confirm their good position.
I used to think like you on tenhou but here after I have started with you all on Yea Forums I spam tanyao and yakuhais and damas and win lot of hands, a lot of the time a solid yakuhunter do snatch away first place from me but that just confirms my second place even more.
its like going for small combos whenever given the opportunity instead of going for big super combos on full punish
If you get a huge hand, you can go ahead and deal into several little hands and not even feel it.

Mahjong is boring and unfun and the only people that play it are old Asian men and weebs that think it gives them "street cred."
You can spam shit hands if you're already winning.
user is talking about the last place player making a shit hand that might at best move them to third.
So is there any difference between this and Tenhou (besides the waifus)?
two rooms worth of ippan instead of one
The real reason is because if you actually play mahjong for real, score is tracked over a series of many games. The higher your score at the end of an east-south game, the more points you get going into the next game. You want that margin to be high, rather than just barely winning at 31k or something.
It's a probability game and many people like to forget that low-scoring hands will still cuck luckshits that are about to win the entire match with a single hand.
People don't deliberately go for low-scoring hands, they simply try to do the best with their haipai. You know whether you're going for a fast but cheap win or a slow but bigger one within the first few discards.
Obviously there's a very fine line between people that think about the grand scheme of things and newcomers that ruin a good hand because they don't know all the Yaku yet. Just be ready to see the same 1000 point plays even outside of the beginner bracket.
The very first thing I did was go into the options and immediately turn all of the voices off
Customization is a feature you pay for rather than just have.

not him, but I'd prefer waiting for 6,7,8,9 sou than 2,3 pin edgewait to make 222 or 123 and make either 2p and 9m a my pair.
Maybe I can even get rid of the 9m as my hand progresses to get tanyao. That hand had mangan potential.
will this game get more generous with cosmetics or am I forever doomed to be the cat

oh wow I didn't know that
oh, now I get it, the more logical choice is to defend, but if one is super close to his why shouldn't he just go for it? regardless of his position.
I am starting to think I am playing a lot like the chinks that everyone is talking about, I also trade tanyaos and spam yakuhais.
You gotta be kidding me...

Play with Yea Forums and you'll get your Yakuman
just dl majsoul plus bro
Last time I got a yakuman was February 2012. 100% serious.
Is that just the last heart or the cumulative value? And what are the values on each heart?

closest I ever got was tenpai for daisangen a few times (and one of those was in Yakuza lel), but obviously that's a pretty easy one to avoid dealing into

shitty gifts for your character
I know the third one is 10k and the fifth one is 50k and they are separate. As the user said, majsoul+ unlocks yaku voices.
holy shit, and people say this game isn't about luck
And the biggest gift is just 1000...
How much money do you need to buy enough gift for max heart?
play 3 players instead. I already got superb yakuman like daisushi, tsuisou and ryuuisou
It would be more about luck if you got those more often. The fact they are rare is a good thing.
You don't need yakuman to win, faggot
Seriously fuck East only matches.
Fucking chinks, it's so dumb 1 unlucky ron and the match is basically over and everyone is wasting time.
Really though just wait for an event. I filled 4 hearts on both girls during chink new year marathon.
Fuck that. I'm not that bothered about not getting yakuman hands, if I could get some that'd be good but if I can't so be it.
I think you're supposed to get bond from matches
But I haven't noticed that
>Start every single round with at least 7 terminals/honors
>Opponents tsumo every time I'm dealer
>Never deal in but still end up in 4th
Suuanko is 50/50 luck/skill you need to know the ways around toitsuba rounds. DSG and Small Winds is luck and retard based. Kokushi you 100% need to brutforce yourself.
So, what events are we going to get?
Silver+. Chests with 1-2 gifts as well.

Game is divided into phase.
Phase 1 is East Wind phase.
If you have a set of east wind during Phase 1, you gain 1 yaku.
Player position per round is market with wind symbol.
If you have a set of wind that is the same with your current wind symbol, you gain 1 yaku.

What exactly is there to monetize in fucking mahjong? From Azur Lane I know that Yo-star is actually quite generous, but I am still curious how they monetized this game
>interest: food, sleep
So I actually calculated the bonding system, and it actually takes a month of gifting your waifu her favorite gift in order to reach bond 5. Which doesn't really matter since we have this neat little client that unlocks the voices locally. of course, if you want to show off, get to grinding.
Sell you .png of waifus, and Saki-like effects when you riichi/ron/tsumo.

Take what you can get if it comes to you, especially if you're dealer. You can still get good score if you manage to combine riichi, pinfu and tanyao, and throw some dora in there.

>Nanba Shibukawa, a member of the Nihon Pro Mahjong professional organisation and 10d Tenhou player, says that riichi and tsumo with one other han (excluding pinfu) is the easiest way to achieve mangan. The last han is left to luck.
>Mangan gives the best balance between hand value and likelihood of winning, and is far more effective at securing a good final placing than a cheap yakuhai or open tanyao. If you’ve got a hand with potential, it’s a huge waste to settle for 1000 points. If you have time left in the round (up until the 8-10th turn, according to Fukuchi), you should maximise your hand. As mentioned above, riichi and tsumo with one other han is one easy method of reaching mangan if your hand lacks obvious potential.
>If it’s past the tenth turn, then it’s time to stop dreaming and start looking at reality. Take what you can get, or even settle for yakuless tenpai to avoid noten penalties.

The timer selection is lacking since there's the 5+20 default then 60+0 and nothing in between.

How do you maximize your chances for tsumo over ron? Seems strongly dependent on luck to me.
I've grinded bronze matches and played with Yea Forums on 60sec timer. I think the extra timer is beneficial for learning new hands.
Sure, then keep reading from the point where the anime abruptly ends. Then when you want to take a break from this endless arc, realize the anime skipped a part and read that instead before getting back into it.
What does it feel like having a starting hand that isn´t useless
Feels like endless ejaculation.

>How do you maximize your chances for tsumo over ron?
Tile efficiency. Generally speaking you shouldn't even care about trying to maximize your chances for ron unless choosing between two otherwise equal options, such as when picking waits for chiitoitsu. In particular, you should not try to set sneaky trap waits if it means hurting your efficiency. Mahjong is a game of tsumo - you can't control what people will discard, so instead go for waits that have the most tiles available for you to draw.
