As for the murders they're (mostly) all possible to solve yourself but if you read for the closed room murders you're going to be solved. Just read for the drama and kickass music.
Also the beginning of part 4 slogs hard and if you don't have an iron will you're not going to be able to survive several hours reading about Ange being bullied and talking to an annoying shota imaginary friend cat

Nice! I bet you must be a big fan of system_0 or the track who played when the relatives began to talk about the inheritance. I hope you really liked the atmosphere of this one since starting from EP2 there will be a definite change in tone and pace. At times I still wish all episodes were built like Legend.
I unfortunately don't think you'll be able to solve the mystery only with episode 1, though. Moreover, the following episodes will be even more confusing. What scenes do you think are fake? If you wouldn't mind sharing your thoughts, it's always fun to read theories from people who don't know yet

Alright here's what I have from EP.1
I don't think everyone who died in the first night actually died. Godha, Krauss and Shannon did die. The rest got their faces ripped off so it was probably fake corpses somehow. I'm unsure about the rest. Someone had to disguise themselves as Beatrice to fool Maria so a woman needed to be in cahoots, so either Rosa or Kyrie. Same person who then wipes the floor with doc, granny and butler and fools Maria again.
Hideyoshi and Eva inspected the bodies, but since someone was alive or not their real corpse, they were in cahoots too, same as the doc.
The killer(s) got out of the closed room. Double Crossed Eva and Hideyoshi and killed them, then somehow made the room seem closed. Then they kill Kanon? We never see him die so he maybe is in cahoots too. He also knew a lot of Kinzo's past time so either him or butler are painting the seals on doors. Maybe both.
The fuckers are here for the gold and wipe the floor with the 3 servants. They die. Maria is fucking crazy so I don't think a potential murderer would want her on the team.
Natsuhi kicking off the potential traitors was a good move
Somehow they needed to know that Natsuhi had a fucking plastic scorpion pendant so they wouldn't kill her, but I don't understand how. Natsuhi also never fired the gun until the suicide, so it was probably fake and she got done in by the real killers. Then they fucking dismember their childs? Well Rudolf and Rosa both hated their children and Kanon and Kyrie would be psychopathic murder machines so I don't fucking know mang.

tfw just finished Ever17, I actually think that was probably Uchikoshi's most well done twist, but getting through chicken sandwich adventure was fucking rough. Almost more of a slog than the first few hours of every Higurashi chapter.

Am I the only one who preferred those parts? My preference might have been influenced by me watching the anime first and having the great surprise to discover the slice of life moments so to speak, but they weren't painful slogs for me.

Oh I thought you were referring to it since Ever17 takes place underwater. That's not the twist though, you know it's underwater right from the start. Go read it if you liked Zero Escape. Just be aware that it's much much less mystery oriented and doesn't really have that 999 oppressive atmosphere. It also doesn't really ramp up too much until you get into the route endings/true route, but I thought it was worth it for the payoff.

I still wonder how the fuck this went out of my head during my re-reads. HEAVY SPOILERS :
This is a pretty big hint towards the identity of the person who painted the door, when you realize which servant was there when Maria talked about the effects of the scorpion charms, from there it's easy to find out "who", but not the why nor the how.
