Garou is somewhat similar to 3rd strike, KoF 98 is considered one of the best kofs and feels very distinctive without being filled with subsystems that might complicate things to much.

Well on places like fightcade you only have access to the older ones. Also there is design changes that get made in the early 2000s entries that make people believe them to he undesirable such as having an assist character or being able to switch out fighters non-combat like a tag fighting game.
There are audiences for certain versions and you can probably discord it up to find matches for XIII and XIV but I think the most universally liked one is 98.
