Been looking to get into the Battle Network games for awhile now. So far the only game I've played was 3, but I had a blast with it.
Any recommendations on which ones to play next and are there any romhacks that are essential to the experience?

Play Network transmission on GameCube, and go backwards to playing 1. That way you'll be ready to slog through 4.
Isn't 4 considered the worst in the series though? I was thinking about skipping it due to how many people hate it on here.
Yes, but it has it's place in the plot. Just do it once instead of going for a 100% and you'll be ok.
If you're going for 100%, pick up the romhacks that act like the Virtual Console versions that give you the multiplayer chips and things for free. Otherwise just go in order. 1 will kinda suck to go back to and 4 is 4 but the rest are alright.
Battle Chip Challenge is skippable. I like it but it's different.
Alright, I'll add it to the list.
Would you recommend any romhacks, like the Mega Rock Patch or the DarkCross Patch, or is vanilla still the way to go for a casual playthrough?
Also, are any of the fan games worth checking out? Shanghai.exe and Chrono X look pretty cool from a cursory glance.
I just bought it for the battlechip it came with an it's actually fun. It also provides a nice change of pace since it gives an insight towards other characters as you play as them.

2/3/6 are the best ones, 5 is decent, 1 is okay if you can tolerate the lack of QOL from later games, 4 is painful
This. 6 is the best thing in the series after 3 and is just a fantastic ending note for the games.
Play 5, it's the best one.
The unique perk is getting your health fully restored after battles.
Yeah but the games are balanced around the hp restore or later on lack thereof, viruses in 1 are still roughly the same threat despite the hp restore, which is why the power plant is so fucking abysmal
Anyone have any recommendations on which of the two versions of the games I should play or does it not really matter?
Is Gregar more of a challenge than Falzar, etc.?
if you're emulating one of the two got a patch that adds all of the end game content that got removed in the NA release.
That sounds right up my alley. Do you know the name of that patch?
just google it bro
apparently it's actually a translation of the JP version instead of actually adding it to the NA version, and it works on both versions
Since you still probably need to figure out what version you want you could just look at what crosses or giga chips you get in each and decide based on that
I tried googling it, but I didn't come up with anything other than a page for therockmanexezone.com with romhacks that only slightly match your description. Nothing comes up on romhacking.net either
I think it's this

Thanks, user.
3 = 2 > 6 > 5 = 1 > 4
I'd recommend playing them in order if you want the "full" story, but honestly these are games you can pop into anytime and not be too lost (outside of 4 and 5). 1 is a slog due to how archaic the design was back then, but you could always play OSS, which is BN1 with a lot of QoL changes and StarForce. 2,3 are pretty strong on their own. 4 is the weakest with the replay three times shit, but the amount of extra shit is pretty nice. 5DS is the better experience, especially if you want to roll through the game with Bass/Sol Cross MM. 6 is okay. Also play NT after 1, as it's a direct sequel.
Is 4 worth replaying 3 times or is it really just a one and done type thing?
Each time gives you a more side missions and different foes to fight, along with a lot of new chips. It's terrible design, especially since some of the best parts are locked behind the 3rd run. However, I would say that the boss fights alone on run 3 make it worth the investment.
Ah, I see. Does the OSS patch make BN1 "too" easy or is it necessary to enjoy it?
OSS isn't a patch, it's the DS release of BN1 with a Starforce side plot involving time travel. It was recently translated, and pretty easy to find.
The changes in OSS make it so you can run from battles without needing a chip, there's a map on the bottom screen (which is a blessing), new chips, and some other bits. You can also play as SF Megaman if you so chose.
That makes a bit more sense. Thanks for clearing that up.
Fuck you guys, 4 did nothing wrong.
I read somewhere that there were a lot of glitches in 4 and that there was some kind of money grind that made it very annoying.
4 is shit, but there's some things in there that are good. Buried under the mountains of shit.
It's mostly Blue Moon that has the glitches oddly enough. There's a Woodman patch to keep it from shitting itself on that section of the story thankfully. Other than that, just play Red Sun.
Is there a way to apply that to regular cartridges or do I have to just suffer?
It was boring and a significant portion of the game was basically filler. The worst part of all BN games is 'backtracking but with a gimmick to prevent you from doing it quickly' and bn4 had more of that than any other game.
Besides emulating/using a flash cart, no.
What's the best version of MMBN 3 and 5?
Blue is usually the posterchild of 3. Better optional fights (Punk, Japanman), better gigas (folderback), and a few other things. They both have their merits.
5 you can go either way. They both have a lot of strengths, and it really comes down to which Navis you want to double soul with more. That's why I recommend doing 5DS.
BN 3 Blue has a fucking broken gigachip which just resets all your chips so you can use them again. BN 5 Team Colonel is technically canon since BN 6 assumes that you already met and know who Colonel is.
Play them all.
>drops most of the cast from the past games
>first boss is unbeatable
>Lan holds onto the Dark Chip for no reason even though Higsby tells him to get rid of it
>the main plot is unaddressed for 90% of the game
>three playthroughs
I could go on, but I'd be here all day.
