left is riichi sticks in the pool I think, +1k for the winner each, the 2nd one is a score booster accumulated by consecutive dealer rounds though I'm not sure how the bonus score is computed though.

honba-bonus is 300 points per stick

The left one is a 1000 point stick, that just shows how many riichi bets are in the pool at the moment. It's shown in the corner because in the event of a draw, if anyone riichi'd their 1000 points stays in the pot until someone wins.

The right one is the honba (bonus round) counter, it's a 100 point stick for the icon because traditionally in irl play the dealer puts out 100 point sticks to denote what bonus round the game is on. They aren't wagered or anything, it's just a marker. Honba gets added to when the dealer wins and stays east, or when there's an abortive draw like the wall running out or all four players discarding the same wind on their first draw. When a round is won, 300 points is added to the score per honba counter and it resets to zero in the case of a non-dealer win.

It's hard to play when I've no idea what's going on. I get the gist of collecting sets and pairs, but then there's ways they interact with honor tiles and other things that seem arbitrary to me. For instance, why would I discard a north tile specifically? I think I had a tanyao once but I had no option to call anything, I don't even know why I won this one.

as a beginner try learning tile efficiency and best hand for this is pinfu. it's closed only so it forces you to avoid often unnecessary calls but always allows to declare riichi and stacks with many other yakus like iippeikou, tanyao, sanshoku etc.

I made this image to try and help new players with getting to know all the yaku. I ordered it by how common I feel each yaku is so that you can start by focusing on the easy ones then gradually expand your knowledge to the later ones. Hope someone can get some use out of it.

So I'm starting to remember a good amount of yakus, but I can never remember which ones need to be closed or can be open. I just got fucked by going for double sequence with one of them chii'd.

The wind has to be your direction, or the table's direction (usually east).

Pinfu is a hand worth no points, meaning only sequences (1,2,3 etc) and one pair, the pair has to be valueless (no dragons, not your wind, not the table's wind) and you have to win on two sided wait for a sequence (e.g. you have 2,3 and then you win by getting 1 or 4, having 2,4 and then getting a 3 does not count as pinfu).

If you look at this you can see the names of the hands.
Toi Toi is a hand worth 2 Hans that can be played open so you can steal from others to make it, the hand is simply to have all triplets. It's a good hand to steal because unlike melds which you can only steal from the player on your left you can steal triplets from anyone so it builds fast.

The thing with mahjong is that you should not try to "go" for hands. You need to make hands with what you've got and knowing what you can make comes with experience. My advice is to just play more and try to learn the hands by seeing who wins with what.

No, he's saying that there's a particular hand where you only want triplets (pons). This is called Toi Toi (all triplets).

There are other hands where you want lots of sequences (chis). One example is Sanshoku Doujun (mixed triple sequences) where you have 3 of the same sequence in different colours.

There are other hands where you don't want to call ANYTHING (no pons OR chis). For instance, you can't declare Riichi (free sex) if you call a tile.

There are some hands where you can have BOTH (pons AND chis). Tanyao (all simples) is a good example, you can have any combination of triplets and sequences as long as every tile in your hand is a number from 2 to 8.

Mahjong starts with learning the hands you can make, just like Poker starts with learning the hands you can make. Once you know those, then you start knowing which hands you can "go for" based on the hand you start with and the current state of the game.

Your default should just be a closed hand with riichi.

There is no "menzen/closed toitoi", that shit is very a yakuman called "suuankou"

just be one tile away from any four sets (triplet or straight) and a pair. Once you are, a riichi button will pop up and you can click it. You get there by discarding tiles that aren't near ones you have and building sets of three with the ones that are.

When the game gives you the option to call "PON" or "CHI", just don't do that. You can declare RIICHI if you're 1 tile away from having a finished hand (that is, there's a tile you can call RON on) and you haven't called PON or CHI.

When I was about 13 my mum introduced me to the chinese version of the game, but I didn't understand it and we never played again. I rediscovered it a couple of years ago through Yakuza, but I always just dismissed it as overly complex. When Yakuza 0 came out on PC I decided to try to give it another try, started looking up beginner's guides and stuff. Then I watched Akagi and that made me more motivated to learn properly and I started to play that flash game to practice. It's been like maybe 9 months and it feels like half of what I do now revolves around mahjong somehow.

You can't open (Chii, or Poned) your hand for a lot of Yaku. NEVER OPEN YOUR HAND UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. If you keep it closed you can get a Yaku by being in tenpai and closed.

It's illegal because you have no fucking yaku, which you'd know if you went through the tutorial that quite clearly says "Do this if you don't know how to play you fuckwit". And it'd be before, during, and after you discard.

Playing IRL is far superior. Actually handling the tiles is great and building the walls is weirdly satisfying. You can just use a calculator where you punch in your winning hand if you dont feel like calculating points.

You can always steal your winning tile, even to complete a pair. It doesnt even count as opening your hand.

There's a tile in the top right, that's the Dora indicator.
If it's a 3man, the 4man will be the Dora tile for that round. If the indicator is a 9 the Dora becomes a 1.
When you complete a hand and it has Dora tiles you get extra points.
But remember, the Dora isn't a Yaku. If your hand isn't in winning condition, all the Doras are worthless.

If someone has 4 of the same tile they can call a Kan which will reveal a new indicator. Increasing the amount of Doras for more potential points.

Here's how the scoring chart works in Riichi Mahjong

When you win, you look at your hand, and award points, called "Fu". It starts with
20 - For winning
+ 2 - Tsumo
+10 - Closed Ron

Then you look at your wait:
+ 2 - Anything except an open wait (You have two consecutive tiles waiting for a tile on either side, like a 34 waiting on a 2 or 5)

Then your pair:
+ 2 - If the pair had value (what they mean by this is if you had a third tile, would you have a yaku? If yes, you have a value pair)

Finally, look at your sets:
+ 2 Pon of simple tiles (2-8)
+ 4 Pon of Terminal/Word tiles
+ 8 Kan of simple tiles
+16 Kan of Terminal/Word tiles
x2 bonus per set if you did not steal any of it, not even for ron.

Add ALL of that shit up, then round up to the next 10.

Then you double that shit for every single han you have. Then the Japanese double it twice more for literally no reason, and those are your Base Points. For you math nerds, that looks like this:
Base Point = Fu x 2^(han + 2)

Everyone then pays you the BP rounded up to the next hundred. East pays and receives twice the BP before rounding. If someone has ron'd, the person who discarded bears the burden of every single player at the table.

EXAMPLE: 40 fu, 2 han = 640 BP.

Winner of the round is a Non-Dealer. The dealer pays 640x2 which is 1280, then rounded up, making it 1300. The other players pay 640 rounded up, making it 700.

BONUS ROUND: Honba (round continuation)
For every round that East wins, he stays east, and a marker is placed on the table. For every marker, each player adds in an additional 100 points to their score. This is included in the payment for the player ron'd.

Example from above, but there are two honba: Everyone pays an additional 200, or the ron'd player pays 600 extra.

This is also how Pinfu works. Pinfu means "No points", so it's 20 points, + win condition, and then all runs with an open wait and valueless pair
