The games were consistently selling at least a million copies until Zero Mission, and overall the series has sold around 17 million units, which is more than Pikmin, Star Fox and Splatoon out of the examples you gave, and also puts it ahead of Fire Emblem, which Nintendo themselves seem to consider a big deal franchise.

Pretty much this. It was said in a crude way but it's not wrong. Samus doesn't act sexy or use her sexuality in any way, and the clothes she wears are justified. Her armor is tight fitting so she would either have to be naked or wear tight clothing underneath. Let's look at other female characters that wear tight clothing. April O'neil. She's not really sexualised but people will find her sexy anyway. Gadget is the same way. So is Harley Quinn (most of the time). Hell, people find Velma more attractive than Daphne even though Daphne is obviously the one intended to be sexy. Only reason people call characters like Samus sexualized is because they can see the outline of her body and it makes them feel uncomfortable.
