A little of both. All of UC Gundam was basically a big psychoanalysis of its characters so the dialogue serves that purpose more than any natural flow.

It was the first one to air on American cable TV, and it did so in the post-FF7 age, where Japanese shit was suddenly really cool. It also aired to a large audience of angsty, edgy pre-teens/teenagers and was also a huge boom for yaoi fans. This new audience had, for the most part, not seen shows like it yet, so it was new and cool. The love for the show today is basically nostalgia-driven. We more or less accept now that it was really fucking terrible.

As a Japanese, I say big yes. Tomino's dialogue is super strange even to Japanese, and that's a big charm and source of uniqueness in the series. Many gundams after UC directed by tomino tried to imitate that charm, but everything failed. You can't copy eccentric. By the way, Tomino's interviews are also strange, the way of tomino's talking tend to be so confusing and unusual that the english translations I have seen on the online sometimes ended up taking what tomino actually said wrong.

Absolutely. Part of the reason G-Reco has such a bad reputation, aside from the wacked pacing issues, is that it was so many people's first experience to Tomino and his dialogue.

My dude, all of this is explained in the show itself. Multiple characters remark on the significance of the elevator and the religion around it. It's not that they don't know death, but peace has been going on so long that nobody really remembers that shit gets fucked up in war.

I'm not saying I didn't figure it out I'm saying Tomino threw the audience face-first into a very foreign setting and didn't give them the tools needed to figure it out without taking a significant effort beyond just paying attention to the show itself. There's a reason the show performed poorly and it's because it was fucking confusing and never took a moment to let the audience catch up.
