I would discard a 1 pin and hope to draw a 2 or 4 later to complete the sequence and go for a iipeikou, pinfu or tanyao depending on the draws later on.

Do you want a quick hand, even if it won't bring you much points? Probably yes.
Are you dealer? Probably yes.
Do you just want to get into tenpai to avoid the noten penalty? Probably yes.
Do you want to keep as many tiles in your hand so you can discard safer tiles? Then no.
Do you think you might draw the tiles you need later on yourself to increase your hand value or press the free sex button? Probably yes.
Don't press it if you don't know whether or not it'll bring you into furiten.

I keep hearing this "You have to press a button to make riichi option appear" explaination but that's just not true.
I've had riichi before due to pure luck and I didn't understand it and it just gives you the option like for everything else.

A lot of times yes. If you can get it you get it but don't rule out toitoi for it or anything like that.

7 pairs is really slow and not worth many points, don't actively aim for it

it's very slow. it's usually better to keep your options open if you have only 4 pairs. if you pick up a fifth then you can go for it. if you're seeing 3 pairs and thinking 7 pairs you've lost your mind.

There's actually a lot of mahjong players around here. Some of us were waiting for the English version of this game to come out, I guess since it's in English it got some extra attention.

Grinding rank is a raw numbers game, you'll eventually be where you should be with enough games but on the moment to moment you can get good and bad streaks.

Just think of it as being too easy if it were open and remember it that way.

the better you are the less variance will be a factor getting out of beginner rooms but if you put enough volume in you will get ot eventually regardless of your skill level. just keep at it user.

I've played Mahj on and off for the past couple of years, mostly as a way to kill time on my phone, but I guess I'll take this game a bit more seriously since apparently there's waifus, a rank system and some variety to it.

Furiten doesn't mean you've got no yaku. Furiten means the tile you can win off is in your discards. You have a legal hand with 4m so you might as well keep it here, especially since 9s looks safe.

Furiten is when you discard a tile that would have been a winning tile. You already discarded a 9s which you could win with now, hence furiten.

You can still win with that tile while you're in Furiten. You just have to draw it naturally, you can't Ron an opponent

That means the tile you wait for to win can't be a 9bamboo, that's what furiten means.
That's how the game works, you read the ponds to see what tiles are safe. The enemy can discard 9bamboo tiles cause they know you can't be waiting for that.

If you're in furiten you can win by tsumo though.

It's only a play style profile based on past performance, so you can check how your opponents usually do. For example someone with low ATK, high SPD is much more likely going to go for quick trash, so don't bother trying for complex hands or exhaust draws.

I think it's just stats based on how you play, it's just fun to look at to be honest.

It's not, however it tends to be something you have to decide from the start. From there, it's calculating the odds of drawing dupes vs not. Not only that, but it tends to be a low score hand unless you get some dora and it's an unreliable riichi if you wait on a non honor or terminal.

If you had discarded Chun instead of 7m, you'd have

Your wait would be more flexible (4m, 6m, 4p, 7p) with no useless tile instead of what you had in the screenshot (4m, 4p, 7p) and Chun as a useless tile.

I hate that they took Saki's cheat mechanic from "she's really good at getting an exact score amount" to "LMAO RINSHAN". I think the entire manga is way more interesting if Saki's role in the captain's seat is maintaining the lead that the rest of her team creates rather than spamming ridiculous kan nonsense.

I actually tried to organize a cross board team mahjong game on tenhou, Saki style, with all teams starting at 100k. Got some people from /u/, Yea Forums, /jp/ but /tg/'s team was basically people from Yea Forums saying 'well I might as well play for /tg/, I browse it a bit'. Game didn't happen in the end because it was hard to schedule with 20 people (or to get 20 people to begin with).

Lemme give some tips for all you new players. You'll thank me later.

-If you care about your ranking, not being in the last place is way, way, WAY more important than winning games. Online mahjong is not about winning, but not losing.
-Tonpuusen (East only matches) are extremely luck-dependent compared to hanchans (East + South). Start playing hanchans as soon as you feel confident about knowing the rules.
-If you enjoy games with crazy yakumans, fast pacing, and almost no low scoring open hands, play Sanma (3P Mahjong). 4P mahjong is a less flashy, more strategic and more defense-oriented game.
-Open toitoi (all pons) hands are almost never worth it. Don't go for them. It feels cool to go "PON! PON! PON!" in quick succession but at the end you'll be left with a crappy wait and almost non-existent defensive options.

Practice by yourself. Learn to recognize potential in your opening hands. Study the yaku sheet and stare at your hand until you can identify possible big hands from the shit you start with.

Read Ten after Akagi, the ending of Ten wraps up everything about the character, his philosophy and his story. It's really fucking good.

I've been low-key getting into mahjong through Legendary Gamler Tetsuya and Yakuza. Of course I went and watched Akagi and Saki is on my watchlist.
This is what really made me play since it's such an easy way to get started. Tenhou just scared me off because it was too fast and in Japanese. So not only did I not get the game but not even the inputs.
Mahjongsouls is incredibly easy and comfy to play.
