I actually don't mind the new design for Sonic. It's honestly about as good as you could make Sonic look in realistic 3DCG.
Don't get me wrong, I would have preferred a fully CG movie that stuck with the cartoon-style aesthetics and setting of the games but I have a tough time figuring out how you would make something like Sonic work design-wise with this realistic 3DCG approach and think that they did the best they could with the design.

I've got some shocking news about the new Sonic Movie that's gonna be coming out later this year. I learned this from a buddy of mine that works at Paramount Pictures. The writing team is looking to push the PG rating just a bit. How you might ask? Well, there's gonna be a scene in which Jim Carrey will emerge from a mushroom. He puts on his goggles, and then he yells at the top of his lungs "PINGAS" and whips it out. It's crazy, but they've found a way to show it in a PG movie. It's important we go see this movie, cause if this is true, it's gonna change everything.
