I'm all for more highly-stylized, well animated, bizarre and arcade-like presentations out of a fever dream, but how are they gonna go about updating Earthworm Jim's design to attract modern audiences? Aside from adding some sort of competitive multiplayer component, how are they going to stay afloat?

Their "Intellivision LLC" (NOT "Intelli-vision" corp), is a small startup studio founded and essentially sponsored by Tommy Tallarico just last year, under reasons and motivations I can't even fathom.
No telling whose working with whom, and who was actually responsible for this Amico, but it seems Tallarico greenlit it.
It's pretty good for a lot of game genres though.
I talked to Tommy at E3 last year. The console is something he wants to see in the competing game market aimed at families and he said it isn't going to launch until they have a good window of exclusives lined up. EWJ I guess is what he is hoping to be its killer app.

EWJ has a few specific parts where difficulty spikes hard, but its not untraversable like Battletoads MEANT to be because of the games lore. They blame the controls there, but honestly Jim 2 wasn't that unresponsive. The weights were off but not by enough to make it unplayable like some people will whine about while Jim 1 had some real absolute ass hit detection on specific things that will wall you on the final stage if you dont learn it by then somehow.
