There was a thread about this last week and Anons theorized that the inflated file sizes were to dissuade deletion and competition by taking up so much space, and I've noticed that most of the games like this are always multiplayer. Doom 2016 had a 20gig size when it first dropped then ballooned to 90gigs when they started releasing the multiplayer updates

That's just a cost saving measure. Kiddy tablet doesn't have a blu-ray drive and memory cards are more expensive.

Its a marketing strategy. You need to be sure they play your game only. So you ocuppy as much space as possible so they dont have other games

The problem is, as much as I like Doom 2016 I haven't played it in like a year because it's that fucking big, only shit like CoD and Battlefield can truly pull that off since they're so goddamn bit and the kinds of people who play those games rarely play anything else until the next Cod/Battlefield/Madden/FIFA/ect. Doom was a mainly single player game and all of the MP updates were a mistake

Imagine what would happen if a company had the ambition of yester year and actually tried to optimize every byte of a game.
Now devs dont have to work for smaller file sizes because worst case scenario the customer has to buy more storage.

Compressing data literally means less content, losing the way songs and textures were ment to be enjoyed only for it to be downgraded by "superior" compression. Advocating for compressed vidya is quite literally why games have less content nowadays
