It's a kind of meta rule that creates the defensive aspect of the game and stops you being able to target players with riichi. There's no particular reason for it but it's definitely a good rule.

Depends on what tile and the discards. Tiles in the middle sector are rarely going to be dropped, ones in the exterior might be worth.

You'd do it if your hand is already strong (eg mangan 8000, or even 5200 is alright) but has a bad wait that you're not likely to draw but people are pretty likely to throw.

Or maybe you have a low value hand and want to keep the lead. If your hand only has pinfu, it probably won't be worth many points (about 3000 most likely with a riichi), but if the dealer pursues you with a riichi, you could pay for 12 000 points very easily. So you'd keep your hand hidden.

For every round there's a bonus tile called dora. For each you have, your hand is worth one more point (han).
There's one 5 for each numerical suit that is red, and it works as a dora too.

The first time I played into a dama I was completely shocked, and asked a few friends that I thought you could only win by riichiing with a closed hand, and they all basically said I was stupid and Riichi just gives you Yaku and that's what you need to win.

I accepted it instantly because it's another part of the game, it's when you're the most vulnerable in a way and is a perfect tactic to get players who may not deal into your hand TO deal into your hand. I've done it a couple of times and it's worked out well.

You're right though, I haven't seen ANYONE complain about Dama until threads on Yea Forums. I'm starting to think a few people started to say that, and now we're getting ironic posters trying to form cliques of being a damashitter or a riichibrainlet.

There's not but there's a neat minefield mahjong website out there.

The difference is that while the strongest might not win everytime, on the long run the strongest will absolutely get the best results. This means you can and should always hone your skills because even weaker players can get to you.

Also, Tenhou, which is about 4th place avoidance, relies even more on skill than that since even having third places isn't a problem.

Even though I've been playing for a while and understand the rules well, the rule for dead wall draw replacement tiles is totally baffling to me. Not because you need to get an extra tile after calling a kan, and not even because that extra tile comes from the dead wall. It's because you take the tile from the dead wall... and then move the last tile in the live wall to the dead wall. What's the fucking point? Just drawing from the live wall would accomplish the same damn thing.

It's not the same tile. There's actually probability behind this stuff showing that tiles that won't be drawn by other players are statistically different.

For example, say you have a pair of dragons and haven't seen the third one come up for a while. If it's not another player having a pair of htem, then there's actually good chances of at least one of those dragons being in the dead wall.

Calling a kan increases the net total of drawn tiles from a normal game without kan. Moving a replacement tile decreases the net total of drawable tiles so that it goes back to +-0

You can pon/kan from anyone.
Kan has a bit more cases, you can do a closed kan (drawing all the 4 tiles yourself then calling kan), which keeps your hand closed. You can call open kan (having 3 tiles and taking the 4th someone discarded for a kan), which opens your hand. But you can also "upgrade" a pon you made earlier into an open kan.

Which would also happen if you just drew from the live wall. Drawing an extra tile from the dead wall and then subtracting a tile from the live wall, is the same as just drawing from the live wall without interacting with the dead wall at all. The total number of tiles left to be drawn in the live wall still goes down by 1.

Replacement is necessary so you still have the right number of tiles in your hand, but where those replacement tiles come from makes no difference. I can kind of see it being an example of the monty hall problem though. A single tile has a 90%~ chance of appearing in the live wall, so if you remove all tiles from the live wall except 14 and that tile still hasn't appeared, the chance of it being in the 14 dead wall tiles is technically greater than it being in the 14 remaining live wall tiles.

But considering that of the 14 tiles in the dead wall, only 4 are drawable, I feel like this makes no difference in the grand scheme of things when it comes to drawing replacement tiles. Whether or not you predict that a tile is in the dead wall, your chances of drawing it as a replacement is still only 1 in 14.

Actually thinking about it now, it seems more like the reverse would be true. Since tiles are much more likely to be in the live wall, it's still more likely to be there even if you've removed most of them and the tile still hasn't appeared.

Yes. First is that when you call a kan, everyone fucking knows that the tiles are gone. Second is that it rarely advances your hand. More likely than not you'll draw garbage at a cost that's not worth it. Third is that it's a double edged sword, more likely to hurt you since you're playing vs three others who might have those extra dora. And then since you called, you don't get the benefit of the ura dora. And if you have a closed kan, it's still better to not kan since you keep that delicious info to yourself, and there's a possibility you can get a triplet and straight from it.
