If you go that late into the 2010s, then Nioh beats pretty much anything in terms of gameplay.
Breath of the wild in terms of innovation.
Kingdom Come in terms of atmosphere and world design, even graphics.

No matter how you look at it, if you count the recent years witcher 3 is hardly even in top 10 anymore. The main draw of witcher were the graphics and the storytelling. Plenty of games do that better these days.

The Witcher 3 doesn't feel fluid at all, the animations are clunky and controls are super unresponsive, botw is super fluid in comparison

also the world is literally just a map of japan, which is good enough
enemy variety isn't even that low as you make it out to be - sure, some games have more VISUALLY different enemies, but effectively they don't do anything more
although Nioh does the diablo loot, it does it 10 times better - item progression is linked to content progression, there is always something new to find, items are easy to sort through and every item has some use either for parts or for making money that is needed to craft items
RNG exists, but it's pretty much guaranteed that you have all the stuff you want after playing for around 200 hours, whereas in Diablo and its clones you can play for 1000 hours and still don't see the item you want

only real issue with Nioh is the amount of cheese and op abilities
the other stuff like world design, story etc. doesn't really affect gameplay

I think it mostly comes down to how much you like aim assisted Bamham combat (ie Bamham, new God of War). If that's what you grew up on, slip-n-slide teleporting into a target when you press attack probably feels smoother. For other people, having control yanked from you probably feels less natural than 'press button > attack where you're looking' games

I love TW3 but D:OS2 is better.
I used to be crazy about Dark Souls but returning to it after a long break after the honeymoon phase was long over made all these glaring flaws it has so painfully apparent, it's still good but sure not the best game of the 2010s. While not the best, clearly some of the most influential.

I enjoyed it overall but there are really long stretches of the game where you're just doing some boring shit for somebody you don't care about. Everything that wasn't the Bloody Baron/Ladies of the Wood questline, wholesome father/daughter adventures, Heart of Stone, and Blood and Wine really could have used some more compelling writing to hold your interest. I wouldn't call it the best but it's definitely not bad. The combat system is also kind of weak though but I expected that after playing the first two.

In terms of gameplay then it would be Nioh. While Nioh may be shitty with its padding, artificial difficulty, and diablo loot bloating it, the variety of skills and the pure melee combat makes it very fast, crisp, and rewarding to those who actually learn it instead of cheesing it.

I just got this game a few days ago and I just woke up. I'd rather play more Witcher 3 than reply to this thread. It might be the greatest game of all time, but at the least it's becoming my favorite. Geralt is slowly displacing Snake from MGS as my favorite protagonist. Witcher 3 is a fucking spectacle.

It's difficult to compare entirely different genres though. Everybody with good tastes will at least agree that it's the best open world RPG of the 2010s.

There's a before and an after TW3, it'll be remembered as one of the classics. Unlike all those "game of the week" games like RDR2 and Horizon.
