As far as I understand, it's a mixed bag of things. On one hand Maduro is incompetent as fuck, on the other, a lot of things in practice haven't changed since Chavez, in political terms, but the US sanctions and meddling in the country has killed off a lot of things, so people seem to know where it's all coming from.

Maduro is a traitor to the revolution. There's an excellent Jacobin article that explains how he's courting private interests and betraying the gains made by Chavez. That being said, anti-imperialism is far more important, and that would be the same even if Venezuela were a neoliberal shithole.

It is true that so far we only have the Venezuelan government's word to go by, however if you want to look for further indirect proof of why this theory has actual basis of support, then look at two crucial things. Look at how many falseflags has the US started or attempted to start, to justify a war or an invasion, Operation Northwoods, for instance. And second look at the wikileaks released Vault 7 documents that show how CIA hacks can falseflag an appearance as if a hostile to the US nation would do the hacks. I'm not saying this is 100% inpenetrable proof, but I definitely won't trust the US on these matters.
