As soon as I saw that there were actual tangible in-game benefits from wearing cosmetic item sets, I knew that the end was upon us.

Yeah but they were in game for years and it was fucking retarded. Each new update continued to make the game worse as well.

The fact that they thought they could even TRY that shit goes to show how hard valve was grooming the playerbase into accepting lootboxes. Valve is the big reason why lootboxes in gaming are as common and bad as they are today.
