because they're an occult/religion-circlejerk fanbase which has the misfortune of being attached to one of the weebest fanbases in the universe, regardless of the persona games' quality. SMTfags need to gatekeep if they don't want their entire existence overrun by a massively more popular spinoff's fanbase who usually decline to play any other game in the series.

If you summon demons it's SMT. If you summon Personas, it's Persona. Pretty simple.

I took a step into the current age and finally got PS2 emulation working. Goddamn I love Nocturne, I'm very much lost with the story and all the implications my choices carry, but the grind tickles my autism in all the right places.

At least SMT:A gave us some fun demon characters that might be done more justice it later games. I'd love to see Krishna or Dagda return in a setting morally grey enough that they're not forced to be edgelords/villainous just so the braindead player'll never consider the virtue of what they're saying.

There are only 6 games that are SMT technically, Smt 1, 2, noc, iv, ivA and SJ, the rest is pure spinoff

Americans just do not understand that Megaten =/= SMT.
Megaten is about dark themes, dungeons, and demon taming. SMT, Persona, DeSu, Summoner, DDS, Raidou, all fall under that umbrella, and do different takes on the original theme and gameplay, it's just that SMT is the natural continuation of those original games while the other ones are more liberal.

I notice it's mostly posers who think they're hardcore because they played 3, SJ or 4 and want to pretend they're superior to Persona players who don't understand this distinction.

No, it's mainline. It's just not SMTIV because atlus decided against it since they wanted to wait for another 3D release. When it comes down to a naming decision that could've gone either way, it's safe to say it's mainline.
