Mixing live action and animation looks janky even when its done very well. 3d can look good and interaction can be a lot more fluid with live action characters, but a big part of the problem is uncanny valley. Sonic would look fine as a stylized version of his videogame self, but looks awful as the 'better proportioned, more realistic' version.

I think the problem with this movie design is that instead of making a model that can be animated well, they took the lazy route and made him proportional to a human so that they could save money by doing motion/facial capture (explains the lips, eyes and teeth, how the computer tracks it, one big cartoon eye would cost money to animate) instead of actual animators. As a 3D artist and animator, this is a really shitty practice on top of really shitty work.

On one hand, Sonic is literally little more than a marketing mascot of the 90's, specifically compared to Bill Clinton as inspiration for his "TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL" attitude and entirely existing to sell a console's crisp CPU processing on speed. This is why Sega can't figure out how to use him properly, because Sonic Team no longer has any of the proper guiding faces worth a damn and reappropriating a 90's character isn't an easy task when his very concept is so dated.

On the other hand, Hollywood are fucking crazy sons of bitches. Every other creator out there wants to have some personal footnote, some step that sets them apart from everyone else. The director of Wild Wild West had a giant mechanical spider in the movie for no reason other than wanting to be the guy in cinema to have a giant mechanical spider in their movie. And Sonic's movie reeks of weird crazy fucks leaving their "creative liberties" cum stains all over the script while ripping off practically every single modern "kids character in real life" movie setup and yet not having any idea what audience they're actually marketing it for.
