I'm an employee at Paramount Pictures, I'm not high up on the ladder, basically a grunt, but I asked around one day about the design. The answer I got was as follows:
Warner Bros. and Roadshow Pictures have the movie rights to the original design of Sonic, they bought it for Ready Player One. Paramount Pictures is doing this movie and so had to come up with a new, distinct design from the original to be allowed to keep the movie rights for this movie. Basically, Paramount has rights to the movie licence, while Warner Bros has rights to the original design. How Sega managed to sell the two separately boggles the mind but they did it.

Posting a frog so it looks like I'm just a shitposter making things up and have deniable plausibility if asked about why someone posted this.

I think it's absolutely hilarious that this movie exists, don't get me wrong. But I didn't find a single thing about what I saw in the trailer funny at all.
