I just played the Ace Attorney trilogy and the fucking music is all stuck in my head, I love it all but it's nightmarish. I'm not really hot on Apollo or the newer games, are they worth it or should I just stop now?

Dual Destinies is alright, SoJ is great, at least trilogy tier.
Play the Investigations games, they're a spinoff to the trilogy starring everybody's favorite Edgelord. They do some neat stuff.

4 is okay. 5 is good but has a pretty shit first two cases and a hit-or-miss third case. The last two and DLC case are pretty good though. 6 is god-tier, one of the best in the series even if its overarching story is a bit bullshit at times. Apollo's cases were iffy, but goddamn was the music good.

I liked her. I especially liked playing as her. Apollo is too similar to Phoenix as a player character. Their dialogue and monologues are very similar. Athena is refreshingly different. The only problems I have with her is that as an assistant, she's just like all the other girls, and in AA6, she's dumbed down too much to make her dependent on Blackquill. It was sweet in a way, but frustrating when you're playing as her. I'd love to have her playable in the next sequels, as long as she stays energetic and optimistic, unlike the other two.

So how would you "gamify" Ace Attorney more? While there is some puzzle or point-and-click elements, it's clear that the games are mostly visual novels. I personally would want a return to the free-roam gameplay of the Investigations games and for it to be expanded upon.

It'd have Phoenix, Athena and Trucy travel around Europe searching clues Naruhodo left to solve mystery, Trucy is the main assistant depending on who you play and Athena is there because of her language skills and (probable) familiarity with how its done internationally. Have at least one case where it's Athena vs Edgeworth.

Make Phoenix barley exist in the plot, a supporting character who's role is equal to the other supporting characters in the story. Not even an assistant. Expand on Apollo's shit that was brought up in AJ and either find a way to merge it in with the SoJ developments or just have apollo take a break from his lawyering in Khurain or something so he can actually finish what was started in AJ. As for Athena she also needs something to do past DD where she can actually have an arc. Either just make her apollo's new assistant or make AA7 another split game where Apollo is doing his own thing and so is Athena until the last case. Maybe Athena will have Blackquill as her assistant or something and that would probably be the best way to do something with Athena.

I won't try to debate about how good Apollo was and when, but I wouldn't say Athena's arc and/or motivation was good, in terms of how it was presented at least. Not even an hour into the game we get blatant signs of her PTSD, and to a Payne no less, for example.

There's a fucking limit. 13 year olds like Athena and Franzy are fine. They had ample time to study and focus on one profession but a fucking 8 year old not only be able to get a fucking MD, something that takes almost a decade to even have the chance for an adult to get one, but also genius enough to invent stuff AND also has the skills and time to be a famous novelist? This doesn't just cross the willing suspension of disbelief it murders it and shits on it's corpse.

I must concede that her PTSD attack in Case 1 shouldn't have happened after Case 3 already happened beforehand, but I still think her overall development was good. Perhaps it could have connected to the thematic through line a bit more but other than these two issues I have no problems.

There were two things similar to Edgeworth's story, and only two. One, the victim is being accused of killing a parent when somebody else did it; two, the prosecutor is painted as the good guy in the last case when he was portrayed as the bad guy the whole time.

Gameplay is similar to Ace Attorney but a bit different. Not as boxed in as AA, your choices actually matter and affect the plot / outcome of the trial instead.
Story is pretty fucking great, with a cool setting in revolutionary era france. And everyone's animals for some reason but eh it works. Sketch-like style looks nice.

And iirc it's not overly long or anything. Definitely doesn't drag or outstay its welcome. I'd argue it's maybe even a bit too short, because I just checked and apparently it took me only 3 hours to complete. But I really liked those 3 hours. Was refreshing to play a AA style game where I actually have to put more effort into solving the case myself and deciding what to do / which leads to pursue, or else I could legit fail.

Final case has Phoenix defending a client accused of killing someone in cold blood with some tie in to the ongoing story of the game. Something has been done to the body to render it unidentifiable but some of the evidence points to Maya being the victim. Absolutely no one can contact her.
Cue a race against time to solve the case. Apollo and Athena help out and Edgeworth too.
Some turnabout happens and they catch out the killer who is terrified of Wright and Co. They come to a realisation that Maya is alive and currently channelling the victim and the victim doesn't know that they're dead. Phoenix looks through the evidence one last time to discover that the victim is Phoenix Wright.

It's interesting you say that because that moment wasn't planned at all. I think Takumi asked Iwamoto to draw her cry but never figured where to use that in the story and he included this scene just for sprite not to go to waste.

It's overall a pretty weak game, I found most cases lingering, but last two cases are fairly entertaining and you need to play all of it for build up to final reveal. To me, it's just marginally better than Investigations because at least I could care a shit about what's at stake over retarded counterfeit money ring.

And DLC case is absolutely worth it.

The problem is that her personality sucks and doesn't work well for a recurring character, she really feels like some developer's waifu OC that exists because he didn't liked Maya (and Nick awknoledges the resemblance as soon as he meets her) and gets shoved in the plot. Her personality is just "quirky girl" like Maya but with pseudo science throw in and she never shuts the fuck up about it. She is like the science equivalent of a gamer girl.

And them you have the timeskip where you could tell they had no idea of what to do with her. At first she was a bitch with Apollo and for the first time I thought they would take an interesting turn with this character, but nope, have unfunny food jokes and more of the same garbage except now she feels even more out of place because Trucy is already the quirky assistant.

The black psyche locks are things people subconsciously hide. With Athena, she didnt remember all the details regarding her encounter with the phantom and her mother's death, so she thought she killed her the entire time. It's usually a lie in the sense that people don't know the details. For her it was due to PTSD. For Kristoph it was paranoia.

Supposedly they can cause permanent psychological damage if people try to force them open, but Athena seems fine. Who knows if that's the truth...
