Anyone played this? I love me some tactics games and just saw it as a Steam rec.

Looks neat, let me know how bad it turns out to be
Shit son is this like FFTA? I don't know why but I really only got into FFTA. Tactics ogre never really scratched the same itch
I would if I wasn't trying to figure out the same exact thing myself. It's $30, which is more than I wanna spend on something I'm not sure about at this point.
You never played the original FFT/WoTL? Tactics Ogre does feel pretty different to play compared to FFTA, and to a degree so does the original FFT, but it was close enough to FFTA for me to get into ezpz.
hire someone who can design better unit sprites
looks like they came from some fashion farmville facebook game
Honestly no I haven't played the originals though I do hear they're good. It's not that I'd even mind the Olde English I just don't have a psp or a means to play the ps1 version or something
Yeah they're pretty off-putting.
Just use PPSSPP to emulate FFT:WOTL. It's missing some of the comfy lighthearted tone that FFTA, but it's absolutely worth it. You can't go wrong since it's free.
Hopefully someone that's played the game shows up, I don't trust steam reviews one iota.
If you play the psp version make sure you get the patch to fix the slowdown. I think FFT is a lot better than FFTA but you probably won't like it if you dislike TO.
FFTA>FFTA2>FFT
>girl MC
no way, fag
Back to TO:LUCT again
i liked Jeanne d'Arc
>I don't trust steam reviews one iota.
Same.
>you probably won't like it [FFT] if you dislike TO
I wouldn't say that. I think TO's major gameplay differences were the heavy reduction on abilities (at least early-game) and increased unit counts. FFT still has lots of abilities and small teams and plays more like TA than TO. Although the story/atmosphere are closer to TO.
Ah shit. I forgot I never finished this game. Does she die at the end? I don't want to be sad.
Personally I like trpgs where you have unique, memorable battlefields where you have to change your strategies to suit the situation. FFTA all just blurs together for me while the other games had some cool fights, despite lacking in challenge overall.
Just pirate it you fucking retards?
never finished it
You know the history of the real Joan of Arc, right user?
Yes, and? It's a video game. And it's a video game that comes nowhere close to reality in its plot (from what I've played).
saw a trailer
the animations kinda suck dick
n
If I remember correctly her friend impersonates her for a while and gets bbq'd in her place. I didn't really like that game though, it was kinda bland.
The Gilles de Rais NG+ takes a really dark turn about a third of the way through.
I can't remember if something happens at the end, but I remember her friend posing as her and dying in her stead, then I think the frog takes her place in the roster and even gets a transformation.
Poor Liane. Can't you bring her back at some point?
And the game was a little bland, but it was decent, and it's not like there are a ton of tactics games to choose from.
Yeah they do, it might get fixed in the future though who knows
They're not as common now but the PSP had lots of tactics games. Yggdra Union, R-Type Command, and Wild Arms XF were good. There's Valkyria Chronicles 3 and KitN which kinda count. Disgaea and Summon Night 5 weren't my thing but some people might like them. I still haven't played ragnarok tactics or gungnir.
I haven't even heard of half of those. I'll have to check 'em out. Disgaea was never my thing either, and I've tried a couple different versions of it.
>R-Type Command
Thanks for reminding me that this exists, I just remembered hearing the second game finally got a translation at some point.
Started playing it. When you're recruiting characters, you can customize them a bit which is kinda cool. Also items apparently are refilled for you but have a per-battle cap on usage instead. Can continue posting if anyone's still here and interested.
sprites look weird compared to character portraits
but keep going, tell me what else it's like
>Archers can shoot through tiles that allies occupy, or at least rogues equipped with crossbows can.
>Animations are indead meh/bad
>The hatch in the upper portion of the screenshot is something I'll need to place a friendly unit on to block off enemy reinforcements
>Basic wizard unit has lackluster range (this was as far away as I could get him to hit all 3 of those guys with the first level of a fire spell)
Pretty standard tactic options so far. I checked the wiki for classes, and it looks like there are a good amount, some of which require a combination of levels between two different classes like how FFT and FFTA worked (I'm sure others did it too).
Yeah keep posting if you're playing it.
The tumblr-tier art is horrible. I don't think I can play this. But I really want an FFT-like game.
Looks like 3 range? Most spells in FFT only had 4 that's not too bad.
that bearded guy in the red leather looks like a fucking crossdresser
Is there an option to turn on a grid? I can't estimate distances.
Throw Stone is back as a single-use item that actually does damage this time around
Class abilities at the start
Scoundrel
>deal slightly reduced damage and attempt to blind
>deal slightly reduced damage and attempt to steal money
Mercenary
>deal slightly reduced damage and knocks the enemy back one tile
>restores some HP and cures several debuffs like poison and blind
Wizard
>fire/water with 1-tile AOE
Mender
>single-target heal
>debuff removal
Yeah the art style isn't my thing either.
Not that I've seen in any option screens, but maybe I'm retarded.
You can choose to move a unit to a tile, decide that was stupid, and redo your movement, which is nice. I remember missing this in FFT after playing FFTA. Also, it seems benched characters still get something after a battle, although I'm not sure exactly how the ability system works in this yet. Doesn't seem they get xp, so they still miss out on levels.
Sounds decent so far. I think I can deal with the bad art.
Nice find OP, I'll wait for it to get bundled with garbage and buy it for $7
Some ability stuff. Seems weird to me that you don't get anything for your subclass, but now that I think about it, I guess that's more or less how it worked in the FF tactics games, so I'm not sure why it seems so strange to me.
Yeah I'm liking it so far. Whether or not it holds up for 100+ hours like other tactics games is anyone's guess.
kek. Never hurts.
Abilities part 2:
>Ability tree selections don't seem to be mutually exclusive as nothing changed on Mind Strike when I chose Power Strike (but maybe it will force me into choosing one or the other when I go back to grab Mind Strike).
>Can equip passives from other classes (of which I have none) as well as counters, so I took counterattack from Merc and threw it on her after changing her to a knight (which I unlocked after taking Power Strike from Merc tier 3)
do the party members get shared exp upon completion of a mission or is exp based on them doing stuff
Is it worse in game?
A summary of the story so far
>two feMCs go on a romantic evening stroll together (not really, they were just meeting the coat wearing, goatee dude)
>come across Edward Elric's alternate reality brother who's also evil, a nobleman (redundant, I know), and now a murderer
>gotta apprehend him in the tutorial fight (happened before I started taking screens) and take him to the authorities in another city so he can't buy his way out of jail
>show up to other city and forced into some council meeting
And apparently this dude, one of their councilmen (least I think it's a man) is a FUCKING VAMPIRE. LOOK AT THIS MOTHERFUCKER. WHO LETS THIS DUDE LEAD THEIR FUCKING CITY.
I honestly missed that bit. I can tell you for sure that it isn't a flat amount across all classes because my healer and wizard had less AP to spend than my scoundrels and mercs, but I had 2 scoundrels and mercs and only 1 healer/wizard, so whether or not you get an amount based off of activity or simply the number of those classes in the battle, I'm not sure. My guess is toward the latter since my wizard was fucking shit up, and my healer was tossin heals on most turns.
Dunno I haven't gotten more than the 4 default classes and knight so far. Probably not
Bugknights confirmed?
gah, that discrepancy between portraits and sprites is bad
Alucard with way too much eyeshadow
Is there random encounters or anyway to "grind" like in FFT, if you want to build up those benched characters?
Enemies can drop loot, which you pick up automatically, but there are also treasure chests on some of the maps. I don't think I've got anyone with anything that'll let me reach that second chest.
And what looks to be a bucktooth overbite where he lacks some stache.
Yeah. You can go back to areas on the world and select "Patrol" which will let you grind encounter battles on there. When I looked, it displayed a level range of the enemies there, so I'm not sure if that's saying they'll only scale up to the max number on that range or if that's just the range of enemies I'll be encountering given the average level of my party members. I do remember reading in the difficulty options that enemies in story battles will only scale up to a certain point and that you can grind beyond that level if you wish, so I'm guessing that either through patrols, or some other means (maybe there are random encounters too like in FFT/TO), you can grind to your heart's content, but I haven't messed with it yet.
god it looks horrendous
Jesus christ, imagine being the person(s) who designed those excellent backgrounds and character portraits and then seeming them get utterly annihilated by whoever did those those abysmal character designs and art style.
That shit is a sin against art and humanity.
Plot Twist: It's the same person
Maybe someone will do a sprite swap.....
nah, won't be popular enough to, even though it desperately needs it
That's a lot of characters. Approximately how many characters do you use in each map?
Don't click the link, it contain viruses.
faggot
Welp. Finished the second (third including small tutorial fight) battle with no new information for you besides the chests. I'm just gonna keep playing normally, and if any gameplay related stuff that's worth showing pops up and the thread's still alive, I'll post it, but I'm not gonna post my playthrough like the Yea Forums Plays Fire Emblem guy 'cause I'm a lazy, boring cunt.
Aye.
So far, 6. I'm assuming that'll be roughly the same all throughout.
>tactical RPG thread
>thread becomes full of people FFT, baby's first TRPG
every time. play something else you plebs.
I started typing the URL into my browser and my dog suddenly died when I was halfway through
WTF??!?!?!
Did they import the sprites from some early 2000's MMO
Yeah I posted it here when it went into early access and it got dismissed as a shill.
Naturally it turned out to be a pretty good game and Yea Forums was once again wrong.
Please recommend some better trpgs
how hard is it to do that?
wondering if simply scaling the characters height down to 3/4 would improve things a bit
don't you fucking insult early 2000's MMOs that way, you bitch
the hats don't seem like they're part of the sprite. do they change depending on what is equipped?
oh sorry we're not playing "ultra hardcore tactics master 1987: big penis compensating edition" like you
No it wouldn't when their class design looks halloween-costume-tier like this
I feel you. The visuals are easily and by far the weakest part of the game. So far, I'm pretty happy with the actual gameplay.
Be glad people play games at all these days
>I don't trust random reviews from a website.
>But I do trust reviews from a website known to have fuckers that like to troll people in buying bad games.
yes, exactly
>reeeee why do people like that amazing game? stop liking good things!
Wild Arms XF?
I never said I trust Yea Forums either. I was agreeing with him about not trusting Steam reviews. I'll take whatever Yea Forums says into consideration bearing in mind a lot of people here will shit on things they've never even played or intentionally mislead people, but usually I just watch gameplay and decide for myself. That said, it's still more than I can say for Steam reviews which I outright ignore.
Yeah that's a good one, unfortunately once you get the last classes the balance breaks apart since you get like 10 turns every time the enemy gets one.
I like the look of the screenshot
There was another tactics game that I was looking into on steam. It unfortunately is sjw as fuck, hope this isn't. Forgot the name, but it was about poor little black children ruthlessly murdering upper class people and being woke
>it was about poor little black children ruthlessly murdering upper class people and being woke
That doesn't ring a bell. So far the game is about some nobleman who murders a dude, your party wants to bring him to justice, he gets a pass due to political stuff, proceeds to send sellswords after you, and the person in charge of your group wants his ass.
Character art looks meh, but at least it's better than Band of Brother or whatever the fuck the matryoshka game is called.
Vandal Hearts
Vandal Hearts 2
Shining Force 3
Only one game in this genre ever gets talked about
Because it's fucking good, so of course people will talk more about it.
There's always a Tactics Ogre fag around though.
Ravness best girl.
j play spiderweb software games instead
You really think Shining Force 3 is good? That game didn't impress me at all. Minimal strategy and very clunky.
I'll look into vandal hearts though, thanks for the recommendation.
>SF 3 but not 1 or 2
>no Ogre Battle
>no Arc the Lad 2
shame
>spoiler
My fucking nigga. I dropped my first playthrough when I realized I missed a minor step toward getting her and either didn't have a save close to that point or did but it was 10+ hours behind where I was. Got her on my second though.
that's some good taste you got there friend but sorry, it's Ozma
Why do all the characters have such psychopathic faces? Like they are all just giddy and can't wait to beat and murder people.
Your character's facial expression doesn't change much from what you picked. Most of the options involved smiling, I think.
If that's the only game in a genre people talk about, that's a problem even if it's good. Think about it for a second.
It has a big political story, three parts, quite a lot of challenge on various stages. It's good.
Not too big of a fan of those. And Arc the Lad is just shit, sorry.
>Vandal Hearts 2
>simultaneous turn-based
would be nice if the AI doesn't completely cheat though
they always moved after you input yours so they can easily adjust to your movement, you can easily check this if you used save states and try different moves
In my experience, there are two types of tactical RPGs: those with massive balance issues that become broken at some point, and those that lack any sort of character customization.
No they didn't. In fact it was the opposite. You could reliably predict where the AI would move and act based on that prediction. Best combat system.
Also that game has so much shit to do, items to find, etc. Great story, customisability. It's a real hidden gem that almost never gets mentioned, or mentioned positively at least.
sure they're predictable and you can cheese them and make them do certain moves (e.g. they will always try to attack a unit if they have their backs open)
but it does not change the fact that they moved after you
AtL 1 and 3 are boring and forgettable but Arc the Lad 2 is a masterpiece, sorry for your bad opinions
Don't know if it's me misremembering or you but I swear it didn't work how you're describing.
just emulated it a couple of years ago because of atlas reactor
as i said i used save states and did some experiment with it
Something about the art style makes me think this was going to be a mobile game or is a mobile port. But I'm hoping it turns out okay.
Also looking forward to Arbiter's Mark, another tactic-like game.
Doesn't look half ba-...
>female protagonist
Dropped.
>Westacuck Art
Fine if you insist i won't give you money.
Damnit I meant Arcadian Atlas.
I got about 16 hours into it before it went live.
The game also has a bunch of difficulty sliders. You can choose if you want the enemy to have counters and passives. If you want them to use revive magic/items. If you want them to have lower stats or increased stats
Benched party members just get benched AP. They get zero xp.
Each class has different level up bonuses towards attributes. So, not every character will have the same stats.
Once you unlock a class, you can create a brand new lvl 1 character as that class but if you change to something else, you'll be locked out of it till you get the needed levels to normally unlock said class.
The bug dude is a pretty much a blue mage.
All the non-unique PCs can become a special class. Whereas the unique PCs have their own personal class.
Goddamn I don't think that guy could possibly scream obviously evil any harder.
>Arcadian Atlas
Looks cool. I'll have to keep an eye on it.
I don't mind either of the artstyles here but using them together is just about the dumbest fucking idea ever.
Bad art decisions has never kept from playing something though.
Hows the grind in all this?
Yeah vandal harts 2 was a real gem. They tried to innovate a lot, i'm not sure if it was for the better, but i appreciate them trying.
Also starting with only 3 units and little by little adding one other person to your party as the game goes on was very cool.
I don't think it's too bad. I only grinded because I didn't unlock some chests on a few levels and did them over again until I went on to the next story mission. Ended up a at lvl 20 when the story missions were lvl 16. So, they were a bit of a breeze.
The game also has very light crafting. You get materials as drops or from chests and can upgrade your items or create equipment.
Upgrading items either increases it's usage or potency.
AI can be pretty smart. They'll lunge you off ledges like crazy or into water where you'll die instantly if you don't have the ability to swim.
>swimming skill
Well I'm sold. There has literally never been a game that had swimming as an optional skill and been bad.
Much like there has never been a game with a mandatory swimming skill that has been good.
Sorry, it's not a skill you can equip. Some classes have the innate ability to handle water and some don't.
You have to equip some flippers in an accessory slot if you're on a class that can't swim.
huh looks interesting
If you have a PS4 you can always go Underwater.
>buying games
Holy cringeoli
>make bugman
>call him Bizzaro
kek
>those fucking character models
is this the mini-golf map?
