Nintendo rules over the depiction and usage of Mario characters with an iron fist. They were autistic about the way Bowser holds his cup of tea in Wreck-It Ralph. Mainline Mario games are very safe and pedantic, never do they use the extended cast like Wario, Waluigi, Daisy or whatnot aside from the occasional Yoshi power-up.
To see a fitting example of what a bizarro universe looks like where Mario is the one with the cringe fanbase and cast of characters akin to Sonic, look no further than the Paper Mario games, especially The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario. Tons of edgy fanfic tier writing and OC Donut Steel characters, hell you can find many Mario enemy OCs dressed up in tacky clothes on DA with a name just as much as you can find a Sonic OC by putting in [your name] the Hedgehog. Miyamoto was smart to nip that in the bud before it went out of control with the bullshit pixel geometric people Kawade made in SPM with that melodramatic backstory of Bleck and Dimentio. Dimentio is practically Shadow combined with Starscream.
