Anyone that lived during this era can explain this pretty easily. The PS2 had full on-board backwards compatibility with the PS1. It wasn't necessarily a better console. It just hit the right buttons.

More importantly, it killed Sega's console division which was really a terrible thing. I get that all's fair in love and capitalism, but I really would have liked to see Sega continue to make consoles. It was just really bad timing that Sony had such a great machine come out right after they were eating losses from Sega CD, Sega 32X, and other experimental consoles.
