Are video games just a form of escapism?

I just keep seeing the same pattern. Video games, social media, the internet, food and drugs are used as some sort of escape but in the end the users life spirals even further and it gets harder to get up and keep on having a good life

I lift, but I wouldn't necessarily call it a "hobby". It can be fun seeing yourself climb to new heights, and you can meet some great people, but that's it.
