Rocket and Pikachu's designs both adhere to their universes. Rocket is designed to be a realistic animal with some human attributes and mannerisms paired up with aliens, while Pikachu and the other Pokemon adhere to the classic designs mixed in with some realistic elements.

Sonic is like a weird compromise between the two that falls short of both.

The Mortal Kombat movie was great, because of how well it portrayed the world of the game. I don't know if the lore mattered so much. But the movie had the look and attitude of the games.

Detective Pikachu can be set in any city, voiced by any actor, with any random sidekick. And everyone will shrug their shoulders and go "welp, close enough"
