I think they must have cut a lot of content and ideas from Automato.
They might have blown most of their budget early on the music and polishing some crap that probably wasn't super important and then got told to wrap it up because that was enough money for a weird ass semi-experimental game. And then they got a few guys scrambling to try to rearrange what they had into something playable and somewhat coherent. That's not even rare in video games development but it's more noticeable there. I still love the result but it is very flawed desu.
