Materia System

One of the best combat systems in the Final Fantasy franchise desu.

that's not FF13LR

Is it that different than 13 / 13-2?

That's not Bravely Default/second so you're wrong :^)

That's not a final fantasy game.

I was kind of reminded of the materia system by the gem system in Path of Exile

It is not nearly far reaching enough.

There are barely any materia that modify the effects of others, and what ones there are have shallow effects. The positives and negatives to characters stats from materia equips aren't significant enough to make any difference to the gameplay at all. Ultimately it would be a more fun and interesting system if it had more extreme elements to it.

the combat is active, like you decide what attacks to combo and set them up as you like, you can even somewhat move to dodge attacks but only if you're good at it
also the item combinations and unique items give a huge variety to it, and some items can only be obtained by player on the harder difficulties
there are also costumes and tons of weapons that change how you play
the only bad thing about the game is it's length

What kinds of interactions do you want? For how simple the game and battle system is, even some of the existing combinations seem like too much.

not a particularly good game either.

Junction system is better if you have an IQ over 35

Too bad it barely has any impact on the game. Magic is mostly too weak and there is hardly ever need to abuse an elemental weakness, and the stat influences are too meager as well. It's something the remake could fix, but I'm sure they'll casualize it even further instead.

Thanks for the laugh, m8.

Materia is interesting in the sense that it's both hilariously broken yet completely useless at the same time.

Well, the game would need to be re-balanced for sure to encourage specialization. Enemies should hit harder, but be more susceptible to elemental and status damage, buffs should be more useful generally.

After this you pump up the physical attack maluses and magic boosts for magic and status effect materia.
In terms of materia interaction, that's more difficult to say. Effects like "huge boost in materia strength BUT significant negative effect on usage" are generally cool, especially in a system where enemy weaknesses are significant enough that this is really worth using. Maybe stringing together spells of different types could create some synergistic effect.

What I dream of is a JRPG where you either optimise as much as you can to game the system or you fail.

The reason Sephiroth throws the [Destruct] materia at Cloud is because he let his guard down.

>Thanks for the laugh, m8.
He's right though.

>JRPG where you either optimise as much as you can to game the system or you fail.
Have you played any of the SaGa games?

>spend all game drawing
or
>use item refine / card mod to break the game in 4 minutes

Great system.

I don't really primarily consider it a combat system, but a customization and level up system. (That being said VII already has the third best after LRXIII and X-2: ATB)

Dresspheres
Jobs
Materia
Espers
Schemata
Equipment/Loot acquirement
Get better at what you do
XIII-2 Crystarium
Class Change
Automatic level up
>Fun stops here
Digital Mind Wave
Sphere Grid
Licence Board
Learning abilities from equipment
Junction System
XIII-1 Crystarium
Choosing between buying items or leveling up

ATB is awful

I haven't. Can you recommend one in particular?

Superior combat system.

You can just set the game mode to Wait (pussy)

Romancing SaGa 2 or Last Remnant are good starting points.
Both are on pc, and you can pirate them.

I could never get into X-2's system because I didn't like how long it took to change outfits during battle, but more importantly I never really understood how the ATB worked. It seemed like half the time I used an ability, the character would dance in position for like 9 seconds while no one including the enemy did anything, and then the ability would come out.

i feel like you're a ff10 guy.
haha :D

The ATB is immediate and realtime. However the more powerful abilities have startup like FFIV's ATB. So they're prepping their moves, unless it's a mere Attack command.

You could set the outfit change to no-animations

>materia in VII
>a really good concept but because of the infancy of the system it never reaches its full potential
>could have been improved on and been a truly amazing RPG/equip system with tons of customization and flexibility
>bury it with VII and never bring it up again
why did SE do this?

you're asking for FF8.

Hell no. Materias were bothersome and annoying. IX, with that "gear that gives you the ability permanently after some time of use" was a lot more fun.

He really isn't, it's a shit combat system. Deviates way too hard from the typical FF combat so actual FF fans don't like it, while also being a terrible action combat, so action fans don't like it.
It's DMC for the poor and crippled who still want to feel like they're hot shit.

FF9s system sucks shit. Forces you to use useless gear just to get a guaranteed skill.
Also next to no customizability for characters.

FF9 is such a boring game.

Way better than being limited in abilities to the materia's you have equiped.

Also, go fuck yourself.

Probably because the complexity of the materia system (maybe not in 7 but any followups) is like too much for what typical battles in final fantasy are.

I'd love more materia as well but when hitting the attack command a few times is enough for 90% of the battles in the game, they probably question the need to come up with systems that support mega-all + magic + mp turbo + hp absorb + mp absorb or whatever

>literally thousands of combinations possible
>limited
fucking FF9 brainlets

>*forces you to steal equipment and actual buy shit for once constantly instead of saving it for later

Fixed it for you

oh yeah I also love artificially keeping bosses alive because my steal did not work out for the 30th time.

FF9 sucks.

Whats the best FF? 6? 7? 8?

5

6>9>5>10>12>7
The rest is garbitch

On the topic of FFVII, can anyone clear up something in the early ish part of the game?
When you are in the slums meeting Aerith, you see Tifa going to meet the pimp lord at his manor to find information.
What was Tifa's plan here if cloud and aerith didn't happen to see and help her out? Was she really planning on spending a night with that whale?

>combat system
>cast wall>be invincible for 3 turns>cast knights of round>win
Oh so deep!

Dude, you're supposed to play it as a kid and not think about stuff logically like that.

Who said it was deep

> to no customizability for characters
You are acting as if it fucking mattered in FF7 when the entire party had all the spells available after 26 hours of playing it.

>>literally thousands of combinations possible
Everybody ended with having all the spells and the characters all being the same fucking thing as if they were their own class outside their limit breaks. At least FF9 had actual character classes.

Your mom after I put it in her.

Even though FFVII is possibly my favorite among them, I'll admit I think I like job systems better than the materia system.

Except for the combat system, which is pretty much a perfection of the genre

Too bad shit is as repetitive as my mundane life. God I can't wait for it to end!

Same plan as when you were with her, probably. Threaten him.

set character jobs are boring and only boring FF games like 4 and 9 force you into that.
literally any other game puts customization first. even FF1 allows you to pick jobs.

If you have Knights of the Round, you've already made it through most of the game (and done a bunch of extra work on top of that).

Materia's a really fun system, I remember the point where I realised they affect stats and being shocked I hadn't realised it in the time I'd played so far.
I like the Junction system a bit more, but it's obviously absurdly broken. The Sphere Grid was definitely fun too.

What the fuck was the point of XIII's Crystarium? It's a straight fucking line.

on paper the brave-default-BP formula is decent and it's fun to break the game, but in details BD falls flat. Even compared to FF5, it has dull as hell jobs and pacing. Vampire and Summoner BD are a complete joke compared to 5's equivalents. 5 has yearly fiestas while no-one is willing to replay BD.

She was going to threaten or halfway seduce him. And was fine with the entire scheme backfiring, because Cloud was dead and she had no reason to save herself for him now, if things went wrong. She wasn't in the best state of mind, since the plan was clearly reckless.

FF7 has no jobs.

>no-one is willing to replay BD
Because of all the same bosses you fight over and over more than anything dayo.

Guy that made FF13 wanted to see his waifu alot. So he made her walk in a straight fucking line and later gave her bigger tits.

>no-one is willing to replay BD.

I can see why. The game forces you to replay itself anyways.
