Are bullet hells a good genre to get into?

Are bullet hells a good genre to get into?

Well, I really like them.
Its the type of game you might really like if you give them a try, but there's no way of knowing until then.
I'm more of a doujin guy but some arcade shmups are fun too.
I'm assuming you mean shmups in general and not just bullet hell

I'm a total casual thinking of getting into these types of games.

What's the best place to start with shmups? What are the must plays? Any kind of flowchart out there?

Deep Space Waifu

Unironically touhou and pick an appealing character.

My favorite shmup to reccomend new people getting into the genre is Cho Ren Sha 68k. Its freeware off the devs website, and its an amazing shmup thats also pretty generous with resources.
As for "must plays" there's a lot of different styles of shmups out there aside from what you may think.
There's the popular Cave arcade games that you can play off mame(or buy some off steam lmao), that pretty much are the games that popularized bullet hell
There's doujin games that go with their own style and usually center around a gimmick like Tale of ALLTYNEX, Hellsinker or Samirdare.
There's horizontals as well like the classic Gradius, R-Type and Darius which you might also want to give a try.
Also there's touhou which is its own unique style on bullet hell that is also worth a try

Why do people get mad at Touhou?

CAVE and Raizing games are generally considered the finest.

Anything in the shmups forum top 25 is a great place to start. Crimzon Clover goes on sale all the time for real cheap so its not a bad starter shmup at all.

The important thing to learn is mindset and how to practice. Stick with one game you like and try to master it, learn the scoring and get a 1cc.

I want to say its a combination of
>only shmup that is still super popular
>fanbase can be annoying

>steam lmao
Is something wrong with the steam versions?

Not that I know of, its just theyre pretty pricey for games user might not even like

Little girls and bad drawings, zunpets, kinda broken most of the time with weird shot types, scoring systems get pretty gimmicky depending on the game. Plus the pacing in Touhou is pretty slow compared to the balls to the wall pace of arcade STG.

The games are great and have their own appeal, but I can completely understand someone not getting into them.

I haven't played that many of them, but I think they're fun. Sure, they're also stupidly hard but their controls are as simple as it gets and seeing yourself get furtger and further every attempt feels good. Actually clearing a game for your first time feels pretty great too.

>Bought fight stick for shmups

>Got a sanwa replacement

>It's fucking hard playing shmups with it

Is a seimetsu better bros? Do any of you use arcade sticks for your shmups?

I always heard the "ls-32 is better for shmups" meme and I initially built my stick with one, but once I tried playing on a sanwa it gave me exactly as much control but just felt a lot smoother and cleaner so now I just use a JLF

Seimitsus are garbage

Thanks fellas.

One more thing: Should I use a controller or a keyboard (don't have a stick)?-

I tried on my sanwa stick but it felt like shit. Keyboard is by far the most precise input method.

I play with a keyboard just fine, but its a matter of preference

A fight stick is the opposite of what you want for shmupping. Movement is very heavy and the dead zone is much bigger to minimize false confirms.

A seimitsu ls-32 is a pretty good choice, since you can trigger in a much smaller deadzone and the resistance is lighter. It's pretty good for precision shmup playing and makes a big difference.

Why is this game getting posted. It's pretty good regardless.

I'd like ports of regular Dodonpachi and Progear.

I hear those were good but the problem I see with them is the stick is small as hell. I was thinking about getting a happy but I head those parts are shit now made by chinks.

Depends. It's the one genre that gave me a lot of after images after playing them.

>That gave me a lot of images after playing them
I don't understand

I think he means from the colors.

Easy, Caldrius Blaze is fun and the only shmup I've 1ccd

Akai Katana is great and easy compared to other try hard shmups

>Tryhard shmups
What?

Maybe not the right word, but Ibara and Battle Garrega are not for novices. Its hard enough dodging bullets, but metal collection, suicide and all that stuff make the game not very fun to play unless you devote some serious time to learning it.

What's that game on the very bottom left? I think I recognize her in a shmup where you can grab stuff and throw it around. Game is fun as fuck, but I only had the chance to play it once in a small arcade a few years ago.

>R-Type
Truly the Dark Souls of SHMUPs

You need a stick with a light resistance spring so you can tap it for precise movement.

They're fun also most have cute girls.

Triggerheart Excelica

I played muchi muchi pork recently and liked it a lot. anyone got cute em up recs?

Also any thoughts on Metal Slug? I've been playing them but cannot stand the slowdown

Gunbird

Thanks user. Found out this game is backwards compatible with the Xbox One for $10.
