You guys are retarded. In a previous cutscene, eggman sees two emerald readings on the radar even though only one emerald was left, so he knew sonic had brought along a fake one. Common sense would say that sonic wouldn't give him a real emerald when he also had a fake one

He has a 200+ IQ. He knew Tails was mechanically inclined and the possibility existed that he had somehow devised a convincing fake. In fact considering the circumstances it was not only possible, but likely. Throwing out that line was a test to confirm his hypothesis.

Reminder that Sonic is a fucking retard. He did not know Tails even had a fake emerald. He brought the real emerald onto the ARK with the full intent of beating Eggman, not giving a shit about there being a chance he might fail and in turn give Eggman the power to blow up the Earth. Considering that Eggman would go on to use Amy as a hostage, had the fake emerald not existed, Sonic would have had no choice but to hand over the actual one.

Why did they make eggman so stupid after this game? His plan here was perfect and it only fails because sonic happened to see shadow use chaos control beforehand. Every game after has him being a bumbling idiot where his own idiocy ruins his plans.
