So when it comes to things that are abstract, there removed from the actual events that a person has experienced, these contrasts between two opposites do all of the work of creating the "definition" of what that concept is.
With Metal Gear (and pretty much all western war media), which aims to present the harmful aspects of war in a cool, fun and exciting package, the message of the media (and whatever comment it makes about war) is made relevant and accessible to us because it has these contrasts that play into our abstract understandings about war-- so, enjoy MGS, liking military stuff but also understanding the nuances of how and why war happens are all part of the overall package.
