As someone who is just... boldly tired of overall swordsman movesets tier characters and being incredibly afraid of Sakurai's possibly limited vision for this particular character itself (Erdrick), it's not that I have anything against the series. It's more the fear of something that might be half-assed. I've yet to see a actual character that actually requires Sakurai to think of a proper manner to implement it while making it stand out. It's also a wish for me to see more of a certain kind of fighter that I also think is drastically overlooked, but only because there are actually very incredibly FEW protagonists that have this as a focus (Nintendo first party mostly, there's more range in third party if Nintendo were to take that approach and in case they did, I think they'd very easily take advantage of a "certain" character as if it were their own, which, technically, it sort of is)
I wouldn't mind Erdrick for instance, if Sakurai actually dared to implement Slime along with it and make it far less sword focused than first looks might seem to imply.
Banjo and Kazooie for me, is another completely trivial matter. I have no particular feelings for them since I did not grow up with them. I barely played the games, but that's as far as it goes. To me, they're animal mascots. They don't... particularly stand out to me but I can't ignore the characters' fans. Not sure whether they're deserving or not, just that they have a unbelievably vocal fanbase.

honestly dq is fine, but considering its lesser known and beloved status in the west, the controversy is mostly that it's going to be dlc in smash. it wouldn't be a problem if it was in the base game. because it's dlc and competition for other dlc square reps, though, that's where the issue is.

Given that there's going to be a movie soon, if they do have plans to bring it stateside/overseas, I'm afraid the whole series might get really generalized and that might actually bite the series' fans in the ass for simply wanting to purchase the character.

The issues with DQ in Smash have literally nothing to do with popularity, hell popularity (at least in Japan) is the biggest thing it has going for it right now. Japs go fucking apeshit over DQ. The issue with DQ is the people behind DQ. Dealing with licensing Dragon Quest means going through like 4 or 5 different people and companies like Yuji Horii, Koichi Sugiyama, Akira Toriyama, Square Enix (who don't even own DQ BTW), and probably more that I can't even fucking remember. And we already know how Squeenix treats Smash by how we got the bare minimum for FF and Cloud.
But do you honestly believe that Nintendo is gonna go through hell to get the rights for a character and franchise to use for DLC that very few people in the western market are even gonna know or recognize. Joker, despite coming from a previously niche jap RPG that's currently PS4-only, at least had his series boom in popularity as of late in the west while still retaining its popularity in Japan. People interested in the competitive scene would get him because he's a new character with new combos and match-ups. Casual players will get him just to try him out or to have a complete roster. I can't predict the future but even people mixed on an idea can be won over by a good enough trailer; there were people who didn't like Incineroar but found him fun to play. And of course there's Japan, who would gladly buy him.
The idea of this huge swarm of people who would kick and scream at the idea of Dragon Quest appearing in Smash is as much a fantasy as the series itself.

Even Lucina and Marth have significant enough differences for competitive players. Every difference counts, especially when they would be clearly different. Really, a sword is only an aesthetic difference. A sword vs a club would really just be the sound effect it makes.

Fair point, but certain games have gained followings such as 8 and 11, so maybe legacy wasn't the right term. DQ11 got a lot of people into the series, so it'd be a shame if that game's quality got overshadowed by Erdrick complaining.

Brave isn't as vague as you make it out to be. It's pretty much what they call all DQ heroes and they call Erdrick by Yuusha more than they call him Erdrick or Roto. Also, while many like to blow this off, those insiders haven't lost all of their credibility or anything. They still have more to go off of than anyone here and they are saying Erdrick.

I mean a coin toss for speculation. Sakurai keeps his notes very close to him and the team is under a strong NDA. The only time something was legitamately leaked online was either a mess up of footage/update data or someone from the west who got footage of the game (I.E the ESRB.) Not to mention, the companies that include the characters are also apart of a strong NDA, which deconfirms Steve and the Chief for me (Aubrey Norris, a Senior Manager at Minecraft expressing/replying to a Steve in Smash post would break a NDA, which means she would have to delete the post, yet it remains up to this day.)
Remember "Jane?" Datamining is virtually worthless for fighter pass intel.

It's still a deliberate choice to put in these words. Chances are they thought Kasumi was going to be a new Joker, when they found otherwise it was scrapped. If that's not it, there was some other reason. It seems pretty clear that they put the name Brave in for a reason, and considering they removed the code when people started talking about it, it wasn't meant for outsiders to read.
Fair. I only fancy DQ as a 'fast-food' JRPG because everything feels so ordinary, and Erdrick embodies that for me. However I still think DQ11 is one of the best JRPGs from these last few years. As far as Square goes, I'd be partial to Sora or Sephiroth

Theory time! Within a code of the game, there are some files of which you cannot change the names of. You can edit the files within the code, but the codename itself cannot be changed due to the fact that there are extensions in the code that prevent it. The fighter data could be one of those files. When the fighter pass was being developed, maybe Sakurai was thinking of putting different characters within the game (before confirming the characters within the fighter pass), and decided to start working on a character. But as time went on, he decided that he wanted a different character instead, the name of the file can't be changed, so he decided to use it anyways. This could explain why Joker is codenamed "Jack" within the game. Maybe Sakurai wanted Jack at first, but ultimately decided Joker was a much better fit, instead of making a new file, he just used what he had. Same thing could happen with "Brave." Maybe he wanted Erdrick, but before he finalized the characters he could have changed his mind for another Square Enix character, like Crono or something.
Crono is less likely than the actual Goku at this point.
I'm just saying any Square Enix character.
Good theory. I'd like to say though, why would he change Erdrick for Crono? Sakurai loves DQ, with 3 being his favorite, and Crono has most of the same legal hoops.
