A little bit of logical thinking. If it's near the end of the round and you don't see a single tile of a wind or honor tile, someone probably has them. If you see four 7s, 8s and 9s can only be made into triplets and pairs.
If someone discarded a lot of sou, it's probably save against him. If he didn't discard any sou, it's probably dangerous. Inner tiles are usually more dangerous.

Yes. In particular, you should discard them in this order:
Non-seat winds
Table wind
Seat wind
Dragons

If a player has discarded a tile, they cannot call on that tile to win. Therefore, you should discard what that player has played. Additionally, any tile by ANY player after a riichi, or for 1 round after another player has played, is also furiten.

So if Across plays a 3p, and you're worried about Left, you can play that 3p because even if it's a winning tile, it's furiten for him until he can discard.

That gets nullified if someone calls that round though, and then the 3p would be safe again.

Anything beyond that would fall under advanced strats.

I only play Sega MJ with mobile app and exclusively play 3p now. Tenhou is becoming really boring with its very simple and plain UI. Normal mahjong is just way too slow and the winning hands are often low and unsatisfying. I no longer have patience for that.

Flipping two tiles down in the kan indicates the kan is "closed", I.E. you drew all four tiles by yourself. A kan is sort of a gamble- you're giving yourself an extra draw, which is pretty much always useful, but you can also give the other guys extra dora.

It's better for new players and it's not any harder to learn the japanese names later, grow up and stop being a fucking weeaboo

That's a concealed kan, you can do it when you drew all four tiles yourself and it doesn't count as opening your hand so you can still call riichi and get other closed-only yaku

When you kan, you're essentially turning four tiles into a triplet, for the purposes of the 4 sets + pair restriction. As such, you need another tile to complete your hand, which you draw from the dead wall after you kan.

The dead wall. In a tile game, you can see the full constructed wall. The last 4 tiles in the dead wall are specifically to replace Kan tiles, because using up 4 tiles in your hands offsets the 4 sets + Pair numbering, so you need an extra.

When you get into the main lobby, there is a giant question mark button that will show you a list of them. You can also look up here: Basically a Yaku is a hand combination, similar to a hand in poker. For example, 1 Yaku is the "All Simples" or Tanyao, which means no Terminal or Word tiles (1/9s and the giant, non-numbered character tiles).

Yaku give you han, which essentially double your score. They are separate though. You need 1 Yaku in order to go out.

People will often look at the XYYZ shape and discard Y from it. That's wrong. The reason they do this is because they look at it like XYZ + Y. In reality, you should look at it like XY + YZ. This way, if you draw another X or Z, you now have one completed set, and another waiting completion from tiles on either side.

Example:

You draw 3

You basically have 345 and then 34, meaning you can draw a 2 or a 5 and complete that set too.

Bonus points, if you get another 5, you have 334455, which is the Pure Double Run yaku, so if you do it without opening your hand, you made yourself more valuable. As a person. On the inside. Where it counts.

But look above. Even if you draw one of the other 5 tiles, that's still a huge piece of the puzzle solved. It's not like you're being asked to draw U or some other unrelated tile. Even going as far as back as just W will help you immensely.

You can never know with 100% certainty if what tile someone needs, but you can determine safe tiles from their discards. One of the hardest things for newcomers to do is bail on the round and go defensive.

If you're building your hand and your opponent declared riichi, you need to decide if it's worth it to continue pursuing, and if so, if the tiles you have to discard are safe enough. Like I said, it's never foolproof, especially if they're in tenpai for something that doesn't require the wait to be part of a pattern (e.g. chitoitsu, where the wait could literally be any tile), but you can generally make inferences about the wait based on discards. Some easy ones to remember is that honor tiles that are unaccounted for get more and more dangerous as the round progresses. Seeing that there aren't any discards from a specific suit can tip you off that they need tiles from that suit to complete their hand. Look up defensive strategies.

Players who know how to defend win far more than those who blindly pursue their hand.
