The big space cigars in CoaDE aren't as aesthetic but they serve to deflect from most angles.
FTL is a huge issue in hard sci-fi, i think the best method would be the Kearny-Fuchida Drive from Battletech, otherwise you'll be staying in system and Dyson swarming.
