When did games lose their soul?
When did games lose their soul?
>When did games lose their soul?
If they released the year after you turned 18.
Allstars
more like 14, at least for me that was around the time when video games stopped being as interesting
>EVERY CAVE LOOKS LIKE A CAVE
autism, original looks objectively worse
2009, nerd culture became popular thanks shit like the Big Bang Theory. 2008 was the beginning of it all thanks to Iron Man.
> Hating on Marvel
Fuck off
>Stars
>On a fucking cave
Why ?
they didnt, you can still find some. they just faded out when corporations realized how much money you can make in the gaming industry and took hold
>When did games lose their soul?
The moment first shareholder bought his first share in game company.
Behead shareholders
They didn't
You lost your own or can't see it anymore due to how jaded you are
Anyone who says that game doesn't have effort put into it is a fucking retard
it's supposed to be luminescent bacteria/algae, not stars.
real caves have this.
So since the start of video games existence
Fuck you and your capeshit, faggot.
I really fucking hated how they changed the boss battles
Why does everything need a fucking eyeball on it? It was fine before
Seething DC retard
Marvel is number one, always has been.
Yoshi dorrie is cool though
When you stopped being a kid.
Someone pull up Brie Larson's feet, this shit killed my footfag friend.
I love the remake for the most part and consider it superior to the original in just about every way.
The only thing I miss is the harsh shadows that they really should've kept. I mean you'd have to be tone-deaf to not hear the complaints about the Ganon fight in OoT 3D.
Somewhere when 3D started to being used instead 2D.
I hate this shit too But the real reason was to show more that majora was infecting these supposed guardians
/thread
This remake fucked up boss battles and fucked up lightning(also a problem in OOT remake) otherwise it could have been perfect.
>changed supposedly because his original appearance scared children
It was to deepen the lore you fucking troglodytes
The first 3 look shitty as fuck the last one is the only cool one
>every dinosaur should look like a big gay yoshi with no variety or soul
Dumb NSMB fags
being fun and having soul doesn't make money 100% of the time.
You can only bet on western games having these qualities very rarely while Japanese games tend to be made far better for the gaming audience unlike western games who have been bought by neuroscience and statistics that the audience is so gullible and stupid they deserve to be exploited.
>Dinosaur looks like a dinosaur
OH THE HORROR, a normal dino is far more out of place
nintendo games lost their soul when pic related happened. other games still have soul.
modern Nintendo genuinely repulses me.
The classic one looks cooler
You know what fucks me the most about these remakes? Is that a lot of the time i see many cases of "if it' ain't broke, don't fix it"
It struck me hard with Majora's Mask 3D, the boss battles were fine, the game looked fine, instead of enhancing the actual look of the game they have this necesity of changing things for the sake of changing them. I feel like Majora's Mask could've looked a lot better and played a lot better if they touched less things than they did
I don't think it's a matter of "soul/soulless" like retards like to spew on everything new that comes out, i just think it's a matter of overdoing things unnecesarily
The third one isn't even official art what the fuck
>Artwork vs. a render for a model that has to move
Yes it is truly a mystery as to why they didn't want to animate all the extra shit on Funky.
when microsoft started making consoles.
I will never not be mad about this remake.
It's the same
Way too fucking easy.
>Fixing the lore
>Bad
>It's the same

Comic bookfags are literally that "my dad will beat up your dad" type kid but older. Not grown up because they still have that same stupid argument except now its with their comic book characters.
Yes because I care about the actual gameplay. I don't give a shit if the koopa no longer has an angry face
Jesus Christ this is horrible
>Fixing the lore
>Good
>I don't think it's a matter of "soul/soulless" like retards like to spew on everything new that comes out, i just think it's a matter of [insert personalised definition of "soul vs soulless"]

Ok you win, sorry
>One is literally the full game
>The other just a simple reference and callback
Ok
Super Mario world
Why do zoomers want realism from a fucking MARIO game?
You tell me
Mario got ruined after Galaxy, prove me wrong, yes galaxy is shit too.
I honestly don't get how people appreciate LTTP's artstyle. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is a fucking 10/10, everything looks great in motion, and a lot of their conceptual shit like the light/dark world differences were fucking top tier. But the art itself is extremely low quality for the generation; its like a barely elevated NES pixel style with the only real difference being more colors in the palette. I tend to find that the only people who like this shit are people who can't actually name another 16 bit game, because they think that LTTP is the only game in the generation or some shit.
What are you implying?
>a one-off fanservice area doesnt have the content of an entire game
shocker
the first one is cool but the rest are a baffling case of if it ain't broke, don't fix it
like the lay out for the castle is completely different
and yoshi house is just a damn chimney now, like geez how hard can it be to connect trees?
>it's a "dev's werent blocked by older hardware and forced to limit their vision from what they imagined to what we see in a game from the 90s, and any differences in a more modern revisit are due to mistakes in the modern version and not due to the ability to more accurately portray their original vision" episode

Mario party 2 is literally the only one that did this though. Even 3 which was made on the same system dropped the outfits.

Honestly, I think it's coming from hipster faggots wanting the sheckes from jewlywood.
>Dark boss arena becomes a vaporwave music video in the remake.
It's not soul, it's just high quality 2D art.
Near the end of the Wii/360 era.
minish cap was always trash
Because not enough time has passed for you to be nostalgic for it yet.
You can tell that the staff hates MM the most, it's why they changed so much and payed no attention to the original details in the game.
They just wanted to push it out so people would stop asking for it.
3D games can have soul too.
>minish cap
>soul
when it released it was frowned upon as the worst zelda game ever made. the game was always soulless shit
Nintendo never had soul to begin with.
fuck your gay ass capeshit
A game doesnt have to be a technical marvel to look nice. It's simple and charming and suits the style of the game well, there are other nice looking games on the SNES too that are technically superior but lttp still looks good.
fuck you Galaxy is great. Everything after it not so. At least Galaxy had some real innovation
They lost their soul when games got really advanced and powerful so devs didn’t have to pull black magic to make their game look good with a specific artstyle and they just make games realistic now.
Well that’s my opinion
Is the down one a remake ?
Fuck you, Odyssey is literally peak Mario and innovation
>When did games lose their soul?
When they became an effective way for shareholders and CEOs to make lots of money.
that's a screenshot from Thiaf

which palette do you prefer most Yea Forums?
>Vivid
>Dark

Those aren't actually Goombas in SMW.
depends on the setting and artstyle
Vivid all the way. I fucking hate the trend of washing out colours to make them "realistic".
i think so too
Muted reduces palette clashing
Kill yourself, capeshitter.
Anything but muted.
when call of duty, battlefield, and battle royale became a thing

Pretty much. Look at Kirby’s adventure. The nes library had a lot of simple games (both in artstlyle and gameplay) but the amount of polish makes it look like an early snes game at times. Even with the most shittiest brush an artist can find a way to make it look beautiful.
caves are usually dark and things glisten when pinholes of light are cast down from somewhere, so the theme fits.
Do any indie games do this low poly style?
I really love it but you never see anyone do it anymore.
false
This one is pretty disingenuous.
>bullshot CGI promo render created with the same computers behind Jurassic Park
>slightly more detailed version of real time in-game character
There's no reason for him to have a bunch of accessories and shit if the other playable characters don't. All of that would have to be flopping around if it were to look good. And it's funny that it doesn't point out that the fur on the right looks like actual plush fur and not like he's covered in throw rugs.
They retconned it and now they're called Galoombas
>not knowing Mario lore
3D World retconned them to Galoombas
A lot of them do low poly, but it’s never styled like at gif. Tbh I think it’s gone to the point where machines are so powerful people don’t know where to stop when they style it like that.
I personally love using muted/soft paletes. Vivid just doesn't look right to me. They pop far too much unless they're in a setting that is entirely vivid to compliment.
PSO to PSO2 is the biggest case of soul vs soulless.
When liberal indies started making games and corps began to only cater to leftists and trannies.
The pendulum will swing back. one day.
That's Sôypoly
To be honest, what i understand of "soul" is all about what makes great a game in presentation aspect. This is not about nostalgia, this about the unique and special feeling that a game can reflect on the experience. The aesthetic, soundtrack, the art style, cinematic and level direction, the sensation of remember everything about the game due to his own charm, nature or personality, etc.
For example: Generally some of the modern developers goes more about realism on his looks, for more graphics advances, with more detail. But always, a general unique feeling of a unique art style can thick on a player, and would never gets old, that also come with a great atmosphere (Looks at Mario Galaxy for example)
I don't know, but i kinda get this about the "soul" thing unironically
A link between worlds only looks like garbage in screenshots.
Muh majora is controlling them.
Even though the OOT remake didn't stick giant ganon eyes on everything.
The real answer is nintendo just wanted to dumb down the fights so they added a mechanic that makes the boss just fucking sit there unable to fight back.
stick on the player*, oops
muted can look really good depending on how its used. I'd say Layton does a great job of this.
>old anime nu anime in a nutshell
The only apt criticism of All-Stars is that the physics of SMB1 are slightly different from the original. Otherwise it is just an overall improvement in every way.
I'd say this gen sometime.
The ps3 killed a lot of smaller developers so a lot less of them exist now.
I hate the new "low poly" look, they just make everything look like fucking triangles, like why does the water have to be triangular??
Actual low poly shit from the early 3d era tried its hardest to hide the "triangle" look while new low poly just does the opposite
never played either game, both look like shit
Wasn't a retcon they were always seperate species, NoA was just retarded when translating

Soul is literally meaningless as a term.

When the phrases/acronyms: titles, franchises, properties, games as services, and dlc entered the mainstream lexicon of gaming.
>Rising development costs and scale of projects have killed soul.
this is such a bullshit claim because video game companies are making more money than ever before even fucking indie developers can make a living making video games. these video game companies have the most resources out of anybody so why don't they use it for creativity and risks like they did in the 80-90s?
i'd say it's because of capitalism's tendency to kill creativity and reduce art into the most formulaic and low common denominator shit. video games were better when you were young because the video game market wasn't established back then. developers had the permission to try new things to see where the market would lead them to profits. capitalism literally destroys the soul
>thinking shit graphics = soul
you literally have that backwards, spyro has this weird smooth texture over everything and most parts of it are a solid shape where mario 64 has textured models that make things look better. Spyro looks like a unity game from a screenshot although it does have way better animations
There are a couple indie horror titles like Back in 1995 that kind of do it. You're not going to find fluid animation like in that gif, but it does well enough in the tank-control style that it's going for.
You LITERALLY have it backwards, N64 games have the awful blurry muddy textures across the board, and PS1 was unfiltered pixel goodness
games had soul?
Is there anything more autistic than being a Spyro fan? I'd say being a furry, but that's already a prerequisite for being a Spyro fan.
>Consistently GOAT soundtrack
I'm being honest when I say I dont remember a single track from spyro and I remember every track from Mario 64. And I grew up on Playstation.
There's a bunch of retro shooters out/coming out on the PC that have great oldskool 3D.
Then there's Dusk which looks like ass but the level design & gameplay is fucking top notch.
I like this one, thanks user
ew that right one looks so ugly. 3D was a mistake
Wait, wasn't this Sonic Adventure before?
The reworked fights themselves are fine, the eyeball shit insults your intelligence.
What game?
Is there anything more pathetic than being a Nintendobab? Even the slightest criticism will get you called a member of a variety of "opposing camps" because obviously no one could have a problem with a Nintendo game without being a blind fanboy for another company, projecting at its finest. The point isn't that Spyro looks good, it's that Mario 64 looks like shit, there are non-Sony and non-Sypro games from the same era which are more soulful and better looking than anything Nintendo shat out during the 64 era.
I wasn't talking about N64 vs PS1 I was talking about Mario 64 vs Spyro
When they relied on filters rather than manual effects
>anecdote = evidence
Spyro is universally accepted as a trilogy with one of the best soundtracks in all of vidya.
That could be said for the remake as a whole.
Please don't drag Spyro into your console war shitposting faggotry.
Mario 64 and Spyro are subject to the console circumstances I described in my post, EVERY N64 game is blurry filtered, very few if any PS1 games are. When low poly is talked about as an aesthetic, the only reference people use are the PS1 and the NDS, the N64 looked embarrassing even at the time.

When normalfags started to dominate the videogame market.
Happy to help. Off the top of my head there is also Paracusia and Helltown, if you're looking for more lo-fi horror. I can't remember the name but there's an indie studio that makes them too, based off 80s slasher movies.

I do in fact remember being scared of Dorrie in SM64 as a young child. I mean, there's a sign nearby that tells you to be careful because he might eat you.
when you grew up
ALBW looks fucking fantastic in motion with the 3D turned on. Of course it looks like shit in blown up screenshots, every 3DS game does.
Not sure what you mean but after my teen years unless the game is either Ace Combat or Elder Scrolls I don't really get hyped up anymore.

Alright, can somebody explain to me what exactly it means for a game to have "Soul" or be "Soulless"??
Some of these comparisons I've seen come across as "It's new, therefore it is shit".
Two words: AAA.
The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road
that gif is upscaled, it looks much worse on an actual DS

Soul is a handy buzzword for retards who lack the brainpower necessary to articulate why a game's aesthetics appeal to them.
It's a shorthand way of saying "Game made for enjoyment or fun" vs "Game made just for money".
New games can still have soul but its much more rare as video games in the past decade have turned into a business.
Most older games weren't made so the company could make literal millions, they were made because someone had an idea they were passionate about.
Now a days you have shit like EA who systematically design games to make the most money as possible, entertainment is just a vector in that strategy instead of the goal.
Soul is basically if a thing has some clear artistic vision behind it. Souless is designed by committee to try not be provoking or challenging. Most of it is just meming but I agree with it in some cases.
Soul is the passion/love put into a game
Thing I like
Thing I don't like
>space junk galaxy
>not peak soul
Cringe.
Allstars is objectively better
I bought a 3DS specifically for Link Between Worlds and I don't regret it.
This. It's impossible to think a 8-bit game looks better than a 16-bit game
A google search takes 2 seconds, but this board can't even be bothered to do that.
Those look pretty neat I will check them out
When I was younger and played this game Malon got me horny when she described lon lon milk. I somehow found that "bad link" comic back then and exclusively masturbated to the Malon/Cremia scenes because I was in love with her. And playing this game and talking to her made me rock hard.
So let me get this straight:
Soul = Game made with love, passion and effort purely for the intent of bringing to life an idea that a creator(s) is very much passionate about. Can be seen in the graphics/settings immaculate detail and polish.
Soulless = Game made purely for profit to appease business stakeholders and other rich investors. Idea for game born out of cashing in on something already successful. Graphics are very basic and generic. Setting is lazy and uninspired.
based
SM64 doesn’t have consistent art direction. Dorrie looks like a beanie baby. Others look like total shit
Cringe
The only thing that matters is the final result, and N64 games looked awful
we have to go back
damn not even a furry but Dixie is hot
It just now occurs to me that the white clouds and grasslands painted on the walls in the first floor of Peach's castles are meant to represent that it's t he "grassland" world 1 area, ala Mario 3, and when you go downstairs to the basement, you've entered world 2, as represented by the desert level.
Rolled up sleeves? you can't do that with your skin!!!
the rework is better because its not as cringey.
Odyssey is literally the best Mario game ever made and Galaxy was a step backward for t he series.
that looks like garbage
The special stages in Sonic Mania. It's a rising trend though, I'm sure more games are going to be doing it in the next decade.
fpbp and based
A Link Between Worlds was great though, the push for 60fps and the smoothness of objects really worked well with the 3d, it's far more soulful than A Link to the Past ever was.

is the soul meme a farce? if low poly artistic visuals are so desirable and popular, why aren't there more indie developers buying into this niche market?
When they released Breath of the Wild, and all the zoomers decided this is how Zelda should play like from now.
i remember playing that shit when i was a kid, good times
fuck the split coins minigame though
Because it takes effort
I need the caption that tells me which one is soul or soulless. I can't decide by myself
Man, i didn't remember Minish Cap looked this good.

its the consumers that are retarded. capitalism delivers whatever consumers demand, and most consumers larp up no soul shit
>when it released it was frowned upon as the worst zelda game ever made.
bud why?
>Posing for a selfie
lmao @ u
I think games had soul because they weren't so cluttered with meaningless detail. Every texture, every object counted. The difference between something like Thief Gold and Thief 4 is massive in this regard.
I remember it being short and easy, but not bad. It just didn't hold a candle to the Oracle games
>overdoing things unnecesarily
I think that's kind of inevitable when remaking a classic game, though. The original graphics were built around the limitations of the system they were on, in formats that no one uses anymore, so most likely someone's going to have to remake them from scratch. And when you're doing that, it takes a very dedicated person to copy the old graphical style exactly. Even if you don't intend to change anything, it's easy to make changes.
Which is to say that you should stop buying remakes of old games you think were perfect.
...
>and N64 games looked awful
the 3rd party games were a hit or miss, the 1st and 2nd party games were all better than the best of PSX
will i get the full soul effect if i emulate these retro games on pc or do i have to get the console to be a patrician?
Gameplay wise, maybe, aesthetics wise, a resounding objective no.
i love stewart copeland but I definitely don't remember the spyro soundtrack
if the emulator runs at accurate speeds without any issues then why bother with actual console
Jesus, what the fuck is this supposed to mean?
The pirate bay
But it doesn't look good according to this guy
>or do i have to get the console to be a patrician?
Literally the only way you need a crt as well. Part of the soul effect comes from scan lines and the click of putting a disc or cart in
bad AAA/bad indie vs good AAA/good indie
Good thing your opinion doesn't factor into it
examples?
>Crysis 1, Prey (1), Stalker series, Hawken
Funny because these are soulless.
2>3>1 as far as art direction is concerned
>the moon
>that nose
I know who did this
Literally any PS1 game looks eons better than the best looking first party N64 games.
about as much as your opinion
Good thing it's a universally accepted fact then
It looks good because its zoomed out to where you cant see all the muddy artifacted textures
>so they added a mechanic that makes the boss just fucking sit there unable to fight back.
Except they had that powerless state in the originals the only difference is that you could hit them anywhere.
No it's the N64 textures that are muddy, PS1 textures aren't filtered
i was under the impression pcs don't emulate console games perfectly and have numerous glitches and errors
A cluster of opinions doesn't mean it's a fact.
Don't remind me what they did to my pink puffball
you're spouting an opinion just as much as everyone else in this thread. Acclaim is based on the opinion of "respected" people. Posting a chart made by a small group of people in a thread on Yea Forums isn't objective. Just like the acclaim of people whose job it is to criticize things is also, subjective
Then you should be able to provide proof.
the duration is greatly extended. you can kill a boss in one turn now with enough strikes.
>Oh my god, Disneeeeey! YAAAS!
Depends on the system and game.
NES and SNES is flawless, beyond that era however you're going to get problems.
It was composed by a real acclaimed composer and not a "video game musician"
>you can kill a boss in one turn now with enough strikes.
Which you could do in the original.
N64 textures worked that way because they were way smaller than PS1 ones thanks to space limitations.
Remember it was 32-64MB vs 700MB.
When they went with ‘muh realism’ give me stylised graphics over realism any day of the week.
use the actual resolution of around 240 you zoomer
so how does that make it objectively good

I don't know, the user I was arguing with was the first one to imply authority = correct, ask him
They actually made the graphics better?
FUCK NUSONIC
>top image looks like it's lit by halogen lights

Except odolwa never did that shit you fucking liar. There isn't a single item in the n64 version that just makes him lay on the floor.
The second isn't just soulless, it's bad art.
Look at the fucking cloak, it was just traced from the second without any thought of how it'd look on the new body shape, and the shading n it makes it look completely flat too.

What was the last "real" era with soul here?
I'm normally okay with HD remakes and buy them over the originals all the time. But something about OoT and MM didn't sell me. And I have a pet peve about owning 2 copies of the same game.
MAybe if they get re-released on switch or something, but 3DS was a horrible choice to remake two of the greatest games ever made on.

Korok seeds but stars and non-existent platforming. Great game you have there.
Minish Cap was a fucking gem specially because it was made when 2D pixel art had already been fully mastered.
I would kill for another game with this type of style and the only thing that could ever satisfy me has been canned forever because it was a gan project too good to be true.
I should learn some game editing tool and remake LA and the Oracles in this style. It's such a waste not to use it again and it's so much better than many of the 3D games we've had across all platforms.
What do you think about Links Awakening remake style?
It looks like something a student would make their senior year in university.
I don't usually judge before I get to play things myself. I do believe it is a step in the right direction in comparison to what they did in ALBW. I think ALBW is not without it's merits but I found it lacking in some aspects since it was trying to mimic a style that maybe didn't work as well as it could in 3D (that one being ALttP). In LA I think they are taking more risks with the style and trying to find a middle ground between it and the old game, specially since they are also trying to mimic the graphics and the art. I found it a weird mix at first, but I will have to play it to judge it better.
MC style is a very detailed one. If it was used in LA, like I suggested before, I think it could even change the tone of the overall game, but that's also something I would have to try first.
