Why isn't the actual game done in this style? I know most of the animation is made in 2D, but there are definitely some 3D scenes in there. And shaders are fucking magical nowadays so making your 3D models look like 2D cartoons isn't out of the question.

Of course, FighterZ is a great example of toon shading. Guilty Gear Xrd is another I can think of off the top of my head, at the E3 reveal people literally thought it was 2D sprites until someone did a super and the camera rotated.

My guess is all the colors. Cel shading with fast, explosive colors tend to blend together making things harder to see. Not the best for a racing game. I would like to see the game in cel shade as well. They could mix so that the characters were cel shade and the surroundings not. Or have a weaker cel shade.

Watch the video around 1:38 where Rouge and E-123 are on the side of the road. The backgrounds are done in a 2D painted style while the characters/cars are a mix of cartoon-drawn (Rouge and her car) and toon-shaded 3D models (E-123 and his car). The part at 2:01 where Tails is driving shows how the painted backgrounds look in motion. In both cases, still and animated, the backgrounds aren't distracting at all since the "toon" colors pop out from the "painted" backgrounds.

Would've been cool if they had gone with this but I guess raw 3d is simpler than a 2d/3d mix. It works on a 2d plane but if you're gonna go full 3d with the environments it probably adds a whole new layer (so to speak) of problems. Then again, Cel Damage kinda did this when it released.

It'll probably be, I'm just disappointed Sega opted for a Sonic only racer instead of a third entry to All-Stars. I can understand the marketing reasons for it since Sonic by himself is more recognizeable than all the other non-Sonic Sega chars in Transformed combined, but it's still disappointing.

I kind of saw the All-Stars games as a celebration of Sega's IPs, new and old, even if just for a racing game, the one way Sega's other franchises would be represented in a respectable way, and now it's all gone.

I'd argue that kart racers are at least better than realistic ones. Kart racers feature more player interaction, more interesting decisions to make during the race, and usually have comeback mechanics to prevent one single mistake from determining the entire outcome unlike realistic racers.

Realistic racing games I agree with though. They only exist for Madden-tier normies who masturbate to cars. Ever notice how, whenever a racing game is shown at E3, they never bother with gameplay, only showing off a million new ways to inspect your car? I still remember how I set my expectations super fucking low when the description that showed Whale Lagoon was returning teased another old stage and I and some others figured it would be yet another stage used in Generations, only to be fucking floored hearing a remix of a song I forgot even existed. In fact, if they must do some more Adventure based zones, I would love to see Angel Island get a set of stages.
Angel Island could have:

>Sanctuary Falls from Transformed or a new Sky Sanctuary stage
>Windy Valley
And then we could have remade versions of Radical Highway and the two Tails/Rouge car stages. That would be amazing. It's why I hope they add plenty of DLC to this game, the potential is through the roof.
