Not far enough in yet. The story isn't as good as Spec, that's for sure. But I hear it gets better as it goes, so maybe that opinion will change. But like Spec Ops, it's a title underserved by its genre in its time.

Spec Ops: came out in a time when modern military TPS were already cliche and boring. Managed cult success because of the way it presented that kind of game.

Days Gone: just replace "modern military TPS" with "zombie and open world games"

This game had a ton of work put into it to, you obvious retard. It also had about 1/10th the budget and a team with 1/100th the experience. And it still manages to be a better video game than that boring shit.

The game was clearly something way different at one point. The city flashbacks were clearly parts of missions in the original game and they cut all that shit out. They also clearly did two recording sessions for the protag, I think to change/add to his character. His in-cutscene dialogue is all pretty normal and well delivered, if boring. But his in-game stuff, which they also manage to splice into cutscenes occasionally, was done in a booth without a mocap rig or any other actors to play off of. In these lines you hear a meth'd-up version of the original character being recorded with worse equipment and alone. It seems like they wanted to make him less of a boring generic huwhite male and told the actor to do a Trevor Phillips impression. It makes the protag totally shizo. It's jarring at first, but you get used to it. A lot of the flashback stuff is cringe central. Totally jank and rushed, hackily trying to evoke emotion but failing miserably. It's got an unironic camp that is endearing.

It's great you're having fun playing video games, that makes you more successful as a person than 9/10 people on this site, but Days Gone is a conceptual abortion that should have been scrapped in the planning stages because it offers nothing new, nothing interesting, and doesn't do anything well enough to justify not only the price tag we would pay for it, but the money paid to the devs to work on it. Like, I bought NeverDead, I played NeverDead, I knew exactly what I was getting, but I also didn't come here and pretend it was anything other than complete shit just because I didn't hate myself for playing it. I unironically enjoy Onechanbara, I understand the appeal of kusoge, but Days Gone tries too hard to fit that model. Give it up.
